Serena Williams is the greatest ever female tennis player even if she fails to complete the calendar Grand Slam, according to John McEnroe.
The 33-year-old, two victories from winning the first calendar Slam since 1988, plays Roberta Vinci in Friday's delayed US Open semi-finals.
"She's the greatest female player I've ever seen," McEnroe told BBC Sport. "She's proven it to me over and over."
The world number one currently holds all four Grand Slam titles, and another victory in New York would take her to 22 majors.

(3,179 posts)I'm going to expire if I don't stop holding my breath. I want so badly for her to have this win.

(14,061 posts)Not worried yet -- Serena always manages to get it together.

(2,404 posts)... But Serena's antics on the court really bother me.

(14,061 posts)The noises Azarenka makes (reminds me of the loons in On Golden Pond) are annoying and unncessary.
AngryOldDem
(14,061 posts)She's not looking as sharp, and the look on her face after missing the last shot in that incredible volley was worrisome. Not sure what's going on. Pressure? Things hitting home a little more? Can't afford any more double faults, for starters.
She's now wearing an ankle brace.

(14,061 posts)She was supposed to play Eugenie Broussard, but Broussard got concussed and had to withdraw. Everybody -- and I mean everybody -- had Serena's win and Grand Slam as a fait accompli.
I feel so, so, sorry for Serena. To come this far.
Commentators on ESPN are stunned. Crowd was too -- did you hear the utter silence after Serena left the court?
Cal Carpenter
(4,959 posts)I'm dumbfounded.
It's funny too, because I'm at work and I *never* hide out and stream tv while I'm here (I'm my own boss, so in theory I can get away with it). But today I decided to while I ate my lunch so I caught the last few games. Just can't believe it. This is the only sport I ever pay attention to, and with my own little business I barely have a chance keep an eye on the scores let alone watch the actual matches.
I feel like I jinxed her by watching, LOL.

(269,026 posts)I'm the jinx - we'll be in New York tomorrow - in Queens no less and I was planning the entire day so that I could watch the final from my hotel room
GummyBearz
(2,931 posts)that was a good run. I can't remember actually following women's tennis before this run. Next up, John McEnroe?

(56,177 posts)They were counting on huge ratings for the final. Now everyone in Italy will be watching, but not here.

(2,404 posts)...I wept for joy for Vinci.
I know that I am in the minority here. But that was one of the greatest upsets in Tennis history. I will not be critical of Serena in this thread. I am not one of her fans. However, I am the first to admit that she is without a doubt the greatest female tennis player in history.
This makes what Roberta accomplished all the more amazing. I am happy for her.
