The Implicit Association test can give you insights on your racial prejudices that you can not consciously control.

At the end of the preface click on the blue highlighted "I wish to proceed"
scroll down the page and look for the blue box that says race IAT.
Have fun!
ETA I didn't know the blue box would move up the list with use.

(2,120 posts)to tell me I'm a racist. There are plenty of people here that will do it for any and every reason.
I know I am prejudiced about many things. I don't care. It comes from over six decades of experience.
I'll deal with it.

(23,720 posts)the more my bigoted views dissipate.
Here's my score:
Your results are reported below:
Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for European American compared to African American.

(2,120 posts)what experiences you've had.
I didn't take the test (yet, maybe I will.) But I'll guess it shows I have a preference for Asians compared to others.

(23,720 posts)get further along in the process faster than others. But I think everyone harbors them towards some thing or another and never eliminates them from their psyches entirely.
What I do think often happens- is that people misuse the words racist when they really mean bigots. Those words have different meanings and I think it can cause much discourse when used interchangeably during discussion. Thats just my opinion.

(2,120 posts)I am not sure of the purpose of the test. And why are Asians left out?

(23,720 posts)That'd be my guess.

(4,959 posts)As a white person who grew up in a very homogenous, white town, my "data suggest a moderate automatic preference for African American compared to European American. " Which is interesting to me. As an adult, I have been exposed to much, much more diversity and spend quite a bit of time with POC both in work and friendships, some quite close. I still would have guessed that my upbringing would have played a larger part in my results. But I've been very conscious about privilege and racism for many years now and have worked (because it takes ongoing work imho) to shed any racism instilled in me by my childhood and our general culture/media, any weird gut reactions and so forth. I have worked hard to be a vocal ally with minorities and the underrepresented. I guess it has made a difference.

(14,532 posts)the same story here. I can add I listened, without interrupting to add my 2 cents.

(25,406 posts)I'm a little skeptical about this test. Basically two tests juxtaposed together, one about whether words such as "joyful" are "good" or "bad", and one about recognizing if faces are European-American or African-American. I am quite capable of doing both tests simultaneously and I'm pretty dubious that my relative response times are any real indication of racial bias.

(63,221 posts)I just don't think I associate being African American with negative traits because I know so many AA's in my personal and professional life that are just as intelligent, hard-working and ethical as any white person I know (plus any other positive traits) and I know plenty of white people who are stupid, lazy and unethical. Maybe that is because I know more white people just because of the circles I run in and the AA's I know tend to be well educated, professional and middle to upper middle class. I don't know. Strange test.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)So that could have skewed my results a bit. I don't really think I have met very many AA total assholes in my life. Not that there aren't any, but since I mostly have been around white people, it would be natural that I would run into more white a-holes.

(33,345 posts)But I think that Xenophobia is a constant of human societies.
I've had racist things said to me by young African Americans, old Chinese women, and of course, my White Grandfather. I've heard Irish Americans berate Italian Americans. And certainly, the BLM movement has hammered home that White Privilege is a manifestation of Racism that envelops all Caucasians in this country, even if they're dirt poor.
I've given up thinking that I'm exempt, and merely prejudiced or bigoted. By definition, I have to be a Racist; I'm a straight white male.
Children may be exempt for a time, but they will be raised in a Racist country, if not a Racist planet, and it will affect them.

(8,579 posts)When it first came out on the web. When I took it then, I was surprised to have the test tell me I showed a bias against white people...or it may have said a preference for PoC, I can't remember how it was phrased. I'm white and southern so I was expecting at least some bias on a subconscious level. But the test made me think about it, and I came to the conclusion that it was pretty accurate. I grew up in a large city in Florida, even though I was born in NC and have lived here in NC for now almost 30 years. As a child in Florida growing up though, I went to schools and lived in a community where the majority of people were of darker skin tone than me. Cubans, Spaniards, Mexicans and South Americans, AA's...well everyone was browner than me anyway, even the white people who were tanned, lol! Hey, it's Florida! It made sense, and explained the inner rage I feel when confronted with racism. I'm going to bookmark this and take it again later when I have some free time to see what it says this time, if that result still holds true.
