http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/05/22/488271/fox-news-ailes-obama/Notable quotes from Roger Ailes' no-audio, no-video speech/Q&A session/rant at Ohio University:
- "Tiger Woods gets hit with a 4 iron and we know every girlfriend within 12 miles. We still don't know anything about Obama"
- "I would love for the AP to go back to being a neutral news source"
- "They're not news programs...Jon Stewart would go out of business without Fox News"
- "Jon Stewart is a comedian. He wouldn't do well without Fox. And he basically has admitted to me, in a bar, that he's a socialist."
- "To be honest, I don't give a damn about being here (at OU)" Classy.

(8,556 posts)By average Joe standards Stewart was doing well in the early/mid 90s, but maybe not by entertainment standards. His MTV show was pretty short-lived and he bounced around doing cameos on crappy movies. But he was gaining buzz, which led to his taking over for Kilborn at the Daily Show.
I never missed the Daily Show back then (it debuted a few months before Fox News launched). Interestingly, I think a lot of people. including myself, were skeptical that the show would last when Stewart took over. Back then the main draw wasn't the host but the correspondents, almost all of whom left the same time Kilborn did. I was pleasantly surprised that the show was just as good with Stewart at the helm, mainly because the writing remained strong.
I'm impressed that the show has become what it has. I never envisioned it would be so relevant. Remember too that back then, it had more of a focus on quirky comedy and the entertainment business. But under Stewart it slowly became more and more political. It really is quite a success story.
I think Ailes is exaggerating about Fox's role in the show's success, but there is a nugget of truth there. Much of the show is dedicated to making fun of the cable news channels. If anything, it's CNN that Stewart should be thanking, since his infamous spanking of them on 'Crossfire' greatly upped his cred.

(39,961 posts)and very tiny amounts of integrity to even try to attack Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart has more integrity and intelligence in his little finger than Ailes has in his whole body, just like Ailes has more meaness in his body than a flock of Westboro Church members and more deceitfulness than the entirety of 1960's Pravda.

(37,162 posts)If we "know next to nothing" by now, that would indicate poor allocation of resources for a news organization. That would be a failure of top management, and that would be... who, again?
Of course, facts have nothing to do with that operation.
