Maybe it's just because I'm a veteran and a former member of the USS IOWA, but the thought that the Pacific Battleship Center would allow this tremendous symbol of America's strength, ingenuity and sacrifice, to be used as a political tool for a political TOOL is disgusting. I contacted them and passed this to some of my fellow Battleship Sailors.
They need to hear from those of us that think Trump's brand of racism, misogyny and xenophobia have no business on the teakwood deck of USS IOWA

(167 posts)would be to voice your opinion that the ship is off limits to any candidate otherwise it is discrimination.
We don't stand for discrimination, right?

(15,351 posts)It should be off limits for political purposes. If he wants to visit and walk around, that's fine, but to sell tickets, have a political rally and raise funds while using USS IOWA, or any military museum as a backdrop should be off-limits.
What's next, a rally at Arlington Cemetery?

(62,444 posts)Look, it is a facility that obviously is rented out for First Amendment purposes.
The notion that it is reserved only for certain types of speech because... "veterans"... is straight up un-American.
You rent the venue, you get to speak. That's how it works.

(62,444 posts)You see that gun Cher's got her crotch on?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Iowa_turret_explosion
The USS Iowa turret explosion occurred in the Number Two 16-inch gun turret of the United States Navy battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) on 19 April 1989. The explosion in the center gun room killed 47 of the turret's crewmen and severely damaged the gun turret itself.

(62,444 posts)But if I should die and have Cher come rub her crotch on whatever killed me, I personally wouldn't be all that upset either.

(62,444 posts)Okay, then fine, just photoshop her into this picture then:
But, in any event, the principle is that you pay for the venue, you get to speak.
Nobody died at war in order to hold the Katzenberg bar mitzvah on the foredeck either, but so it goes.

(62,444 posts)Because, if you watch the Cher video, the elevation on the guns is operative.
I don't know about the Iowa, but on its sister ship here in the Delaware River, the New Jersey, the turrets are all welded and inoperable.
Although, they are nicely aimed at the Ben Franklin Bridge, which is cool.
However, someone might get the impression that the turrets work on the Iowa by seeing the Cher video.
Cher is clearly shown in the video with working turrets.
But, yes, I guess I should post, as my film credits, the Hollywood Productions Featuring humans and/or ME:
Star Wars
Citizen Kane
Gone With The Wind
Deep Throat
The Godfather
The Last Picture Show

(101,361 posts)When Cher filmed on the Missouri in 1989, it was still on active service. So I hope they could change the elevation.

(24,376 posts)Sorry for the delay in responding, but I've been on the road.
Note the second paragraph of the Wikipedia link;
They tried to pin it on a gay sailor. This was 4 years preceding the "Don't ask, don't tell" era of Clinton.
As for your other response to me above, I agree with you. I just said what I said because YOU said in the previous post that a private charity owned it. That is not supported in the website you linked.
But I agree...it's a space for rent, basically, and since I have no dog in this hunt, I could give two shits if Trump wants to hold an event on it. I won't be there so it doesn't matter to me in the least. The organization is free to do what they want as far as I am concerned.

(62,444 posts)I had not seen it, and I think she is one talented performer.
Apparently, that was on the Missouri though, when the Navy still had it. The Navy had reviewed the song and the arrangements for the performance, but had not been informed in advance of what she would be wearing.
I mean, duh, it's Cher - of course she is going to be wearing something spectacular.

(24,376 posts)The attire was...::::ahem:::; less than decorous for the venue?!?
Heh heh
Hells bells, you may remember some of the stuff she used to wear on the "Sonny and Cher Show" was over the top and that was in the early 70's!
She would walk out on prime time wearing something like this, for fucks sake!
I, being a young, red-blooded American male in my formative years, had no bloody problem with it at all!

But, I'll still stand by my comment that you either allow all or none.

Here's a ship museum that is probably doomed to fail because they just cannot get the money.
