Coffee, Tea, Misogyny

“It was still really fun because we had sex in the shower. Hospital sex is weird, when she’s drugged, it’s strange, but it’s really cool.”

“Could she give consent?” the Rutledge asks. “Could she give consent, Jay?”

“Uh oh,” Owens laughs. “That’s my bad. That is my bad.”

“You might’ve violated some California laws. Good thing we don’t live in California.”

This exchange is highlighted in a Jezebel.com story about West Asheville’s Waking Life Espresso owners Jared Rutledge and Jacob Owen. The quote is taken from a series of podcasts two produced under the name Holistic Game, graphically detailing their sexual exploits, outlining strategies for manipulating women into sexual consent or proceeding without clear consent, spewing misogynistic vitriol about female customers based on weight, ethnicity, age, attractiveness, and submissiveness or lack thereof. There is a corresponding Twitter account. Both the blog and the account are deactivated, but much of the content is archived online. Links to that treasure trove of vitriol is available on at Ashevilleblog.com.

“95% of women are just fucksocks.”

Asheville Blog broke the story last week and local media outlets followed up after public protests began outside Waking Life. Much of the information in those mainstream reports is sanitized, likely due to the graphic nature and amount of profanity that make publishing direct quotes problematic. It’s important to note that the public uproar is not about a simple less-than-puritanical stance or consensual kinky sexual behavior, but about manipulation and disparaging of women across the board and perpetuation of rape culture. Waking Life products were removed from the shelves of local stores, and Orbit DVD quickly cleared out remaining stock by letting customers know Orbit would donate $50 to Our VOICE rape crisis organization for every remaining $4 Waking Life bottled coffee sold. Several other local businesses are joining in donating profits this week to Our VOICE.

We protected women. Don't get me wrong, we were out for sex, in which I little received, but not like that. We actually liked the women.

Not sure what happened to the culture, but meanness is actually "taught" quite a bit now -- through twisted, unduly cruel cartoons to small children (Nikoldeon) and pop media culture.

There's a lack of self-respect present in these attitudes, too. Like they've never asked themselves, "what kind of man do you want to be?"

Human interactions have become depleted, not whole, in the background.

Just a symptom of a modern culture that teaches brutality, and humor is based on being derisive and mocking.

It was kind of a vague comment and I think it was actually the cartoon network that I was thinking of. I just remember when my child was a few years younger, there were certain cartoons on cartoon network that just seemed so bleak, negative, violent, and with no redeeming value.

Maybe it's gotten better now.

love, or falling in love, must terrify them, so they must objectify the people who might cause it.

Super creepy shit.

"It wasn't real; we were just doing drunken, nonsensical rants to amuse ourselves!" -defense...

Even if their stories really are fiction (and I believe 95% of them are), that's not going to help them now...

17. I think the only fiction was their level of aggression to these women....

Or how much the women enjoyed aggressive behavior. It seemed they were decent at first, and acted like big asaholes in the morning- and that mostly that was ill received. Given the level of obsession one of them had developed with "the game" I have no doubt he had plenty of sex. It's really percentages- and it seems he devoted every waking moment to stalking women. In particular- vulnerable women.
Interesting that Mr Carefree basically stalks them ALL on Facebook to see who they are dating, even the ones he claims he is not interested in. Creep.
And all of this because he got rejected in a marriage proposal- he takes it out on all of us. Typical.

15. Asheville wakes up to bitter brew: A look into the Waking Life scandal

--

Local businesses began pulling Waking Life’s iced coffee from shelves Sunday, less than 24 hours after the blog’s creators were revealed.

At French Broad Food Co-Op, four male staff members made a unanimous decision to remove Waking Life products from shelves before board members came to their own conclusion, General Manager Bobby Sullivan said.

---

In order to sell the remaining Waking Life iced coffees from their store, Orbit DVD in West Asheville donated $50 to OurVoice for every $4 spent on a bottle, Marc McCloud said, Orbit general manager.

OurVoice provides counseling services to individuals affected by sexual abuse and assault.

---

Other businesses are following suit, donating at least ten percent of their sales from Monday or the entire week to OurVoice, including Battlecat Coffee Bar, Patton Avenue Pet Company, Business 420 Screenprinting and Harvest Records, McCloud said.
