A night full of storms in Council Bluffs and the surrounding area could lead to a morning commute full of headaches and, now, school delays.
Officials with the Council Bluffs Community School District and St. Albert Catholic Schools announced a two-hour late start just before 6:30 a.m. in response to widespread street flooding. Heartland Christian School announced shortly before 7 a.m. that it will also have a two-hour late start.
One unofficial report says nearly 6 inches of rain has fallen in the city, prompting the National Weather Service in Valley, Nebraska, to issue both a severe thunderstorm warning (which expired around 5:30 a.m.) and a flash flood warning until 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The slow-moving storm produced heavy rains, pea-sized hail and wind gusts measured at 60 mph at Eppley Airfield in Omaha.
Low-lying streets, particularly near the Missouri River, could see localized flooding. The National Weather Service's original warning also covered Crescent and Council Bluffs before expanding to Carter Lake and portions of western Mills County, including Glenwood and Pacific Junction.

An SUV drives through a flooded street in Council Bluffs on Wednesday morning. The photo was shot on South 23rd Avenue near South 16th Street. Street flooding was so bad in the Bluffs that schools delayed classes for two hours.
