UPDATE TO ADD:
The words are likely to resonate at a time where the political debate in the United States has been marked by a divisive debate over immigration

Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our common home, we are living at a critical moment of history. We still have time to make the changes needed to bring about a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change (Laudato Si, 13). Such change demands on our part a serious and responsible recognition not only of the kind of world we may be leaving to our children, but also to the millions of people living under a system which has overlooked them. Our common home has been part of this group of the excluded which cries out to heaven and which today powerfully strikes our homes, our cities and our societies. To use a telling phrase of the Reverend Martin Luther King, we can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it.

(45,319 posts)My problem is in giving moral smacking authority to a person who also denigrates minority people and says contraception is murder.

(45,319 posts)would not be excused for doing so. But he is excused for being an anti gay and anti choice activist and that says a great deal about the actual level of support in this Party for LGBT rights and for reproductive choice.
It says it loudly, clearly and it voids all contracts.

(5,764 posts)There is an ingrained impulse in a lot of people, especially anyone raised religious, to make excuses for deplorable moral pronouncements if they think they were religiously motivated. Especially from someone like the Pope.
If a Republican said it? Condemned. A Democrat? Condemned. A plumber? Condemned. an accountant? Condemned. A Kindergarten teacher? Condemned.
A Catholic? All of a sudden there's this undercurrent that instantly enters the conversation of "Oh, tread lightly... that's their religion we shouldn't criticize their faith...". and it's amplified by orders of magnitude when you're talking about the head honcho of all Catholics.

I actually love watching the USA react
Personally, I hope it leads to dialogue. I don't care whose god he represents - if he can encourage USA to talk about, poverty, social justice and planet sustainability, I'm listening...
I certainly would not want him on the SCOTUS, but as head of a religion i gave up decades ago:
- not the worst pope ever.
Actions, not words move me,
I will watch not so much what He does but what WE do.
in the meantime,
more popcorn?
