Chicago TV Station Wishes Jews A Happy Yom Kippur With Nazi Emblem

A Chicago television news station made a truly unfortunate art choice to accompany a segment on the Jewish High Holidays on Wednesday: the yellow Star of David that Jews were legally required to wear during the Holocaust.

The stock photo was first flagged by a Chicago editor, who posted a screenshot of the WGN news broadcast online.

I am sure some will wonder "what's the big deal?". I must say I am a bit surprised this was WGN Chicago, which has a pretty large Jewish community.

WGN = "World's Greatest Newspaper".

Also, WLS (ABC affiliate) = "World's Largest Store" (Marshall Field).

did stand for World's Largest Store, but it was Sears, not Marshall Field. Sears put WLS on the air in 1924, and sold it to Prairie Farmer Magazine in 1928. ABC bought it in 1960.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the Luftwaffe characters in that show were members of the Nazi party. Werner Klemper stipulated in his contract that Colonel Klink should always be a loser.

Do you dislike Mel Brooks' The Producers as well?

I was just wondering if the poster included those characters on purpose - for the irony/humor of it.

Because the actors who portrayed Sgt Schultz and Colonel Klink (John Banner and Werner Klemperer, respectively) were both Jews who fled Hitler's Germany. It's pretty common knowledge that all the major German/Nazi characters on the show, including Major Hochstetter, the Gestapo man, and General Burkhalter, were played by Jewish actors.

It's called irony.

There was an intern working for the NTSB that sent that and then confirmed it. The news agency thought it was legit since it was confirmed.

http://wgntv.com/2015/09/23/a-message-to-wgn-viewers/

WGN –TV today issued an apology from General Manager Greg Easterly and News Director Jennifer Lyons, following an error in the September 22 broadcast of WGN News at Nine:

“Last night we ran a story to recognize Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. The artwork chosen to accompany the story came from a graphics image bank. Regrettably, we failed to recognize that the image was an offensive symbol.

We are extremely embarrassed and we deeply apologize to our viewers and to the Jewish community for this mistake. Ignorance is not an excuse.

Please know we have reviewed our in-house policies and made changes to do everything we can to avoid such mistakes happening in the future. Thank you for your understanding. We promise to do better.”
