... might have been one of Bill Bryson's travel books. It mentioned how, in Germany, high voltage warning signs translate to "It is strictly forbidden to touch this wire," while in Italy they translate to "If you touch this wire, you will die." Whatever works, I guess.

... if they stumbled on a button in an isolated cave with a sign saying "Do not push this button or the world will end!" they'd sprain their fingers.

Saw a sign in a video the other day that said "No Trespassing: violators will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."
