WASHINGTON (AP) Education Secretary Arne Duncan is stepping down in December after 7 years in the Obama administration.
Duncan says in a letter to staff that he's returning to Chicago to live with his family.
The letter was obtained by The Associated Press and confirmed by a White House official. The official wasn't authorized to comment by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.
President Barack Obama is tapping Education Department official John King Jr. as acting secretary through the end of his term. But Obama is not nominating King to be secretary.

(16,254 posts)The majority of the time when their excuse is to spend more time with family, there is a deeper cause.
I emailed this article to my daughter and I'm sure she is elated to hear he will be gone. Will his replacement/acting sub continue his disastrous actions or bring something to boost public education and not concentrate of charters? Duncan should have been gone a long time ago.

With the next election we have a chance to make changes in where the Democratic Party stands on the issue of education. Where do the candidates stand on Common Core? On school privatization? On teachers Unions and tenure? Student loans? Vouchers??
IMO, the Party has strayed WAY too far into GOPer territory on the issue of education. I plan on voting to make that change.

(14,971 posts)King is a Brooklyn native who worked as a teacher and co-founded a charter school in Boston. He joined the education department in January after a turbulent tenure as commissioner of education for the state of New York, a position he assumed in 2011. He was a key architect of new teacher evaluations tied to test scores and played a key role in pushing New York to adopt new tests aligned to the Common Core State Standards years before other states did the same.
King defended those moves, favored by Duncan and the Obama administration, even as they made him the target of public outrage. Parents saw their childrens test scores fall and teachers unions called for his ouster.
