(47,209 posts)that is often how it works. it could be a lot to do with fucked up brain chemistry, his parents marriage and breakup bringing out complicated feelings.
sad his mom took him to the shooting range, knowing he had both emotional problems and huge social ones. she is lucky to be alive.

(47,209 posts)super common. Siding with whoever "comes out on top" - which would more often be the white person, would also happen.
Not saying his Dad was abusive, just saying it's really not as simple as look at him and WE decide how he should "identify" or why, really- if that makes sense.

(118,282 posts)and that he apparently had some interest in nazi Germany. I haven't found any information at all on the question of whether his mother considers herself "black" but I really can't see how it would matter
Whether or not he called himself "mixed race," whether or not his mother called herself "black," whether or not his skin hue closely resembled mine -- none of that really has much bearing on the possibility that he had some crazy hateful ideas that he put into action

(39,215 posts)he was a hater. And more than likely he listened to the hate media - especially if he was interested in Nazi Germany.
My family has a multitude of different racial backgrounds and children can have difficulty with racial identity as they grow up. Especially if a parent pushes them to "be like me".
When our little ones were little I talked to them about it and told them to learn and take the best things out of the ideas of both parents. Freedom of choice is really important in building your own self concept.

(38,312 posts)My own take is that if you ever have daydreams about killing people with a gun, even imaginary "bad" guys in self defense, you probably shouldn't have a gun. Maybe you should just stick with video games.
U.S. gun culture is marvelously accepting and supportive of angry young men and sociopathic idiots, sometimes even after they've killed people. Just look at most any shot-by-the-cops-story. Or worse, fuckwits like George Zimmerman.

(38,312 posts)If I accept that dogs can eat animal protein, I'm in no position to complain about hunting.
Hunting with respect for both one's prey and the natural environment are much more ethical than "factory farm" meat and dairy products.
I don't believe "self defense" is a valid reason to own a gun. I don't think most cops are actually qualified to carry guns, let alone civilians.

(509 posts)And I'm about as anti-gun as it's possible to get.
These are also a tiny proportion of all guns, so my contention that almost nobody should have a gun stands.

(4,941 posts)You can't legislate it away, you can't confiscate it away, you can't wish it away. Some people are born to be bad. You can't change that.
The answer is to address mental illness. You'll notice, in almost all cases, friends and family said something "was wrong", but they took no action to short circuit the action that resulted in lives lost.
The problem is, addressing mental illness opens a whole new can of worms.

(26,587 posts)Let's hunt down and lock up anyone with "mental illness". That way we can prevent mass shootings without infringing on personal liberties.

(38,312 posts)Maybe I'm too Christian, in a Jimmy Carter sort of way. Lusting after your neighbor's wife is just about as bad as sleeping with her. Imagining yourself shooting someone is just about as bad as actually shooting them. Either way you get a big red "Fail" in the great big permanent record of your life they keep at the gates of heaven.

(1,582 posts)"They just laid on the ground and pretended they were dead," Willis said.
As Boylan lay there, she heard the gunman ask others in the classroom to rise and state their religion, she told her grandmother. "If they said they were Christians, they were shot again," Willis said.
A law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly, confirmed that the gunman asked students about their religion during the shootings.
I am happy that law enforcement are not using the gunman's name (it will be known for the record), and is encouraging others to do the same. I don't care to know his name.

(118,282 posts)... two officials familiar with the multi-page note in question had confirmed Mercer was, in his own words, "in a bad way." "[He] felt the world was against him," said one of the officers, in a comment to the news outlet. "<He said he would be> welcomed in Hell and embraced by the devil ... he was depressed, sullen." Mercer, who was killed during Thursday's ensuing firefight with law enforcement, also complained that he had felt lonely and had never had a girlfriend. "He felt the world was against him," added another officer ...
