If you live downstream from one you better find out if it is safe.It only takes one big rain storm for a dam disaster.
Dams are just one part of our deteriorating infrastructure, one that receives little attention, especially since New Jersey has never experienced a catastrophic dam failure with huge loss of life.
However, with 500 year storms becoming more common, many New Jersey dams are still not up to standards and potentially endanger thousands of lives downstream.
There are more than 1,500 total dams in New Jersey, and they are classified into three general hazard potential groups:

(3,447 posts)...sorry, not possible to resist.
Our whole infrastructure is toast. I just got back from some of that fun country gravel road driving. I haven't actually had to drive on a gravel road in 10 years that wasn't a cut-back along the edge of a field! Bridges are in critical shape, dams are in danger, water treatment is almost medieval. Meh.

A better way to divide 'fund' money to the state so that people can (individually, or in small groups) repair things that THEY think need repaired, not what the most powerful lobbyists want repaired. Like a holding pot where work performed is reimbursed from said pot.

NJ is an organized crime haven...much like NY, FL.
