And unfortunately, it shows.

However, Captain Phonesex won't debate anyone with more gravitas on an equal playing field, so Dave is the only one we get to see really stand up to him.

Well, Dave and Jon Stewart, really.

There really isn't anyone else doing what David Letterman tried to do with Bill O'Reilly.

And there really needs to be.

the rest is character assassination and gossip and rumor-mongering and such.

the bj stuff was only the last couple of years or so of his tenure, and there was plenty of semi-scandal crap before that.

i don't recall any specific policy jokes, but if the opportunity presented itself, i can't see dave not having taken it.

A while back, like 20 years ago, at least...

He would give the occasional interview and sometimes he'd answer with "I pay my taxes" in a mocking tone. Mocking the adage, and usually accompanied by some ridiculous thing that paying ones taxes wouldn't justify.

I think Letterman is just a whole lot more Colbert and a whole lot less P.J. O'Rourke (the latter wanting to make people laugh, but only caring about the feelings of the people he wants to be at parties with --ergo, PJ can make fun of us, without apology, but the wealthy, conservatives he hangs with, he has to let everyone know it's all in fun and he doesn't really mean it).

Obviously, I think a lot more highly of Dave.

talking about Dave's liberal leanings. It's one of the reasons I have always loved him more than any other late night host.

And I think he gets funnier and better all around every year.

AND I think having a son is a good part of why he just keeps getting better. He wants there to be something of a decent world left for his kid to use all his inherited money in. (Please note that is not a dig at him for having money. He earned it fair and square and it stands to reason his kid will inherit it. If anything this is pure admiration for a guy who has a lot but still worries about others.)

Dave (like we did, here) saw how an "acceptance" of the little fraud, led to the squandering of a possibly once-in-a-lifetime chance to finally get a handle on our debt situation...and how the idiotic handling of our government led us to a dangerous place.

Dave probably also sees the deliberate/rude/crude/racist treatment of Obama, as an issue the "media" has chosen to equivocate away.

He's also placing the same amount of scrutiny on some of the talk show hosts/media commentators who seem to show a conservative bias

I'm betting not
