So I was at the gas station when I remembered that my oldest sister

turned 70 today. It's a big effin' deal in our family. I only had her cell number saved on my phone but decided to call anyway. I got her and they were in Hamburg about to head for dinner and then live ballet. This was her hubby's gift - a weekend at a nice hotel and a trip to tonight's ballet.

Before you think it's excessive Germany is next door to Denmark. I remember watching the beaches in Denmark fill up with Germans way back in summer 1993.

I once went to the beach in Denmark in October - my sister's sister-in-law had on her bikini - I had on my wintercoat

When we visit, he takes us to the most interesting of museums and restaurants.
They've been married for 45 years - they have worked very hard and played very hard as well.

That is a lovely birthday present - Hamburg ballet is magnificent if that is your thing - and big sis always loved ballet.

My parents are both 91 now, so I have some good genes on my side. However, as I watch them fade, I can see my future. And so life goes, as my mother said the other day. They're both amazed at their longevity, and pretty unconcerned about things. I keep learning from them, as always.

on his birthday and I reminded him that based on genes, none of us is likely to have 20 years left. I was being kind - it's less. Still life has been an absolute blast.

When I review my 70 years, which I do quite often, I'm amazed. I couldn't have asked for a more interesting life. It's been wonderful, both the good and bad. I've learned from it all, and will continue to learn.

Life's a gift. Life's a random experience. I'm lucky to have lived in interesting times.
