It is obvious that Putin is not fighting ISIS but helping Assad against the Syrian rebels.
Should anything be done about this, and if so, what?

(24,692 posts)Russia will learn (or remember) that the early days of military success and 'painless' bombing will be replaced by the expensive and endless casualties of occupation and asymmetrical warfare. For now it seems to serve their national interest as a strong international power and may help them with negotiations in other parts of the world.
There is a reason that occupations - as Afghanistan (for the USSR and the US) and Iraq (US) - are eventually abandoned.
