WASHINGTON — Ben Nelson is leaving his post as CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Through a spokesman, Nelson declined an interview request. A statement issued by the association said that Nelson’s term ends Jan. 31, at which point he will not be renewing his contract.

Instead, he intends to return to “private law practice in Nebraska and Washington, D.C. and spend more time with his family,” according to the statement.

Nelson, a Democrat, served eight years as Nebraska’s governor before representing the state in the U.S. Senate for 12 years. He is 74.
