Conservative Website To Give Away Free Guns Until Election Day
May 24th, 2012 4:56 pm Henry Decker

The Daily Caller, a conservative website run by right wing pundit and noted hack Tucker Carlson, is holding a contest in which it will give away a free gun every week from now until election day.

According to the website, each gun will be engraved with the Bill of Rights.

“Like most Americans outside Washington, DC, New York City and most of our nation’s news rooms, large numbers of Daily Caller readers love guns,” wrote Daily Caller CEO Neil Patel, apparently missing the irony in the fact that he runs a news room in Washington.

Several commenters on the post announcing the contest have volunteered their reasons for entering, such as “we have to protect ourselves from the big bad puddy tats{sic} or the New Black Panther party,” and “Liberals are in Season right now.”

What could possibly go wrong?

and pay the dealer a small amount for his work: running the required background check on the winner.

That's the simple (and legal) way of transferring ownership of a gun, especially across state lines.

I guess I don't care what some rightwing repub does, as long as Dems win in Nov.

Why not have a sweepstakes to provide a medical service or pay down part of a student loan debt.

Don't be threatened by their beliefs. Be inspired by your own and use your beliefs to draw others to you.

Who will they gain? No one. All they can do is appeal to people who already value guns. Healthcare and education appeal to everyone. They can appeal to only a narrow group while we could appeal to the entire spectrum. While I support the 2nd Am I admit guns have a negative vibe. Healing and learning are inherently positive.

Sun Tzu said you don't win just by reacting to the enemy -- or something to that effect. I think I read it watching my husband play video games.

Anyway, the point is: we win only if we bring practical, working solutions. You can only devote so much time to yelling, "They suck!" before you lose your audience. They want to be the party of 2nd Am rights and spend their days yelling, "They suck! They want to steal your guns!"

Imagine the undecided voter who turns to us wondering if that is true and we say, "Actually, if they want to give away guns that's their gig. They should also give away coupons to attend gun safety courses. Hey! You know, I heard your kid is in college. I bet those textbooks get kind of expensive, huh? Well, we aren't giving away guns but here's a certificate for a semester's worth of books."

Which has the stronger message?

Attacking the other side doesn't "do" anything for anybody. We need real solutions and real ideas for struggling people.

I don't have a real problem with people wanting a gun for personal protection, hunting, etc. but when people start talking about wanting guns to protect themselves from some vague threat(s) from the government, I start getting nervous. Guns and politics have traditionally not mixed well and people that paranoid about the government are incapable of making rational and responsible decisions involving the use of guns IMHO.

Tucker violated rule one of armed protection firearms, clubs, swords etc.. Rule one: Never ever threaten anyone, by the time you armed the time for verbal threats are over.
