I just want to say a big heartfelt thank you to all who donated to my family's effort to travel to see my mom who has gastric cancer. My wife and I are both unemployed aside from some transcription work my wife does we would not have been able to plan this trip. Things like this never come at a time you can afford them and the pain and struggle of having to find some way to make what may be a final trip to see my mom was made much easier in a way I could not have dreamed of by the many generous gifts.
I just spoke to my mother in San Antonio and told her the great news that we will be able to come down and spend quality time with her and that at least for three weeks she can experience waking up each day to the smiling face of her baby granddaughter. She only got to see her shortly after she was born and she is now 18 months old and a absolute joy that I know will lift my mom's spirit. This news has already had a positive effect on my mom as she sounded better than she had all week.
We plan on documenting our travels and how these generous gifts are used. We will be travelling from Louisville to San Antonio.

I am still amazed, God bless all of you.
Our expectations were exceeded many times, we are suspending the campaign. Now we can go on to making our dates, and plans with the certainty that we are going to be able to do this. Thank you all once again!

(5,937 posts)I have been interviewing and waiting to hear back from 5 interviews I had last month. My wife picked up a transcription job from home but it doesn't pay much and only when they offer work. I also have been doing as much work piece meal to help us get by. My stepson was diagnosed with 22Q deletion syndrome and we are going to 4-5 appointments of varying specialists every week it's been really hard, though I know and I never forget that there are millions far worse off than us so when the news about my mom came in I knew we could either sit in despair or kick it in gear and get down there to see her because it really is progressing rapidly and because she went from 140lbs to 103 in less than a year she is thinking she may decline all treatment so she can enjoy her time as much as she can because we are all in agreement that the chemo that they want to do first before they remove her stomach will be brutal on her. We are still waiting to hear if it has got into her bones in which case they say all they can do is palliative care and then we still need to get down there as soon as we can so she can enjoy her family and new granddaughter. This time last month we did not know any of this. We didn't even know she was sick. If not for the generosity shown by so many I don't know what we would have done. This experience has taught me something very valuable about the kindness of people and that despite how media wants to show how bad things are that there is a lot of good going on in the world.

(5,937 posts)are plans are going forward thanks to DU. We are set to leave on November 7th and stop in Memphis where a friend has generously allowed us to stay the night and in then Dallas where we will stay with a distance relative before arriving in San Antonio. We need to do this trip in two days because my daughter is only 17 months and she has never been in a car this long. I have driven it straight through on my own before but this will be better. So, just letting you know those of you that donated that this is legitimate and we are so grateful.
