Time to act on 'Talbot Boys' (MD)

By RICHARD CALKINS

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh indicated Oct. 16 that the state will begin the process of recalling all Maryland license plates that bear the image of the Confederate flag ... In another Oct. 16 development, the Roger Taney statue, by a unanimous vote of Frederick, Maryland’s Board of Aldermen .. will be removed from the Frederick City Hall ...

The removal of Confederate flags and imagery must be difficult for secessionist states ... In 1948, Strom Thurmond’s Dixiecrat Party ran on a segregationist platform with the Confederate flag as a logo ... George Wallace’s gubernatorial and presidential campaign rallies were distinguished by supporters waving the Confederate flag ...

In spite of all this action, the Talbot Boys remains on the Easton courthouse lawn ... One would think that our county council .. would now summon the courage to vote on removal. The council is meant to serve all Talbot citizens, but as long as the monument remains the message is that they only serve some.
