this to be very effective. On it's own its ok just to counter any Repub lies though.

IIRC Nixon did achieve a surplus one year, thereby eliminating the deficit entirely for that year (deficit being the one-year excess of expenses over revenues). Because of net deficits in the other years of his administration, though, he increased rather than decreased the public debt (the total amount owed by the government).
If you want to stick with the deficit, it can't hurt to have a picture reminding people that Nixon was a Republican.
