Grave Dance? Fuck yeah!

Iraq's Ahmad Chalabi, leading voice behind 2003 war, dies

BAGHDAD (AP) — Ahmad Chalabi, a prominent Iraqi politician and leading advocate of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein, has died of a heart attack, Iraqi state TV reported Tuesday.

The report said he died in Baghdad but did not provide further details on the circumstances of his death. He was 71.

Chalabi, a secular Shiite politician who lived in exile for decades, was a leading proponent of the invasion to topple Saddam and provided false information indicating that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. He had close ties to many in the Bush administration, who viewed him as a favorite to lead Iraq after the 2003 intervention.

However, he had a falling out with the Pentagon following the invasion amid accusations that he had passed information to arch-foe Iran.

(snip)
He became a leading figure in Iraq's exiled opposition in the 1990s and cultivated close ties with the future Vice President Dick Cheney and Washington's so-called neo-conservatives, who favored a more muscular U.S. policy in the Middle East.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, Chalabi played a key role in convincing the administration that the Iraqi government had weapons of mass destruction and ties to al Qaeda, unfounded claims at the heart of the case for war.

Following the invasion, Chalabi was appointed to the 25-member Iraqi governing council and earned a seat directly behind First Lady Laura Bush during the 2004 State of the Union.

I hope this whole era can be documented in an extended "People's History". It would be a shame to let the Texas Board of Edjikashun have any say in the recounting of histor!

There was a man who went to the newsstand every morning, growled at the front page, and then walked away. One day, the newsboy asked, "Sir, what are you looking for?" The man snarled, "The obituaries." The newsboy replied, "But, sir, those are on page 30!" In a voice as cold as February ice, the man replied, "When the asshole I'm looking for dies, it'll be on the front page."

You're on the front page today, Mr. Chalabi. Enjoy your time in Hell. The shades of all the men, women and children you helped kill see you on your cold slab ... and they are pleased.

I'm posting very little these days myself. The great intellectual debates that used to be so much a part of DU have all but disappeared. It's all "rah rah" my candidate/my party anymore. I can't even post our campaign efforts because it was deemed "bragging."

Death didn't magically erase their deeds. Death didn't imbue them with goodness. Dying didn't change the circumstances of any of their victims.

I'll save my concern for the victims of people like Chalabi (and Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Tenet, Rice, Powell, Ashcroft, Feith, Yoo, Gonzales, Addington, Mukasey, Hadley, Bybee, Goss, Bradbury, Haynes, Myers, Miller, Sanchez, CIA agents, to name just a few etc..)
