in Kentucky:
Matt Bevin became the first governor from Louisville in a century and Lt. Gov.-elect Jenean Hampton became the first African American to win statewide office in Kentucky on Tuesday as Bevin led a near-Republican rout of state constitutional offices.
Democrat Jack Conway failed to roll up the large margin in Jefferson County he needed and couldn't minimize losses elsewhere as Matt Bevin grabbed large margins throughout the rest of the state.
With 93 percent of the vote counted, Bevin led Conway 52 percent of the vote to 44 percent.

(6,409 posts)Republicans could control governorships and legislatures in 35 states. It's probably more like 32 or so, but we can't abandon that Third Way strategy that's working so well for us.

(3,535 posts)But us means a supposed liberal voice that attacked the entire state because of kim Davis and 20-30 people who would show up to support her. The ones I know don't care for her and don't make marriage their business but aren't going to go protest Davis in their free time when she was removed by the court anyway.

(6,324 posts)Despite the assumption they are all stupid country bumpkins they actually do see, hear and understand the attitude of many in our side that discuss them with a mix of arrogance and contemp.
Disregard and mock the rural residents at our party's peril. Talking about them or to them with a tone of arrogance and condescension that fits the stereotype of the "northeastern liberal elite" doesn't win anyone to your side and tends to turn off even rural dems, and does even worse with unaffiliated voters.
Look at the races in VA where Bloomberg pumped loads of money- and lost. Because out here in rural America he is seen as an arrogant NY liberal who lives with bodyguards while wanting to lecture rural people about guns.
You can win national elections by just winning urban areas and being dismissive of rural folks. But you won't win control of state legislatures or most governors offices doing it- and won't win control of the House doing it.
pscot
(21,024 posts)we don't seem to be able to learn. Democrats from urban areas keep getting re-elected so they become the party. Fewer rural Democrats means their voices are unheard or ignored. It's become a vicious cycle, and the more urban Democrats dominate the party, the less credibility we have in rural areas. Howard Dean understood it, but he was rejected by the DLC crowd. So here we are.
Thats is all of it in a nutshell. It's bad enough when your party leadership all can't relate to the rural party members because they hail from very different backgrounds and lifestyles, but add to that the attitude displayed toward them (just look at many posts on here) and you end up with folks who may share your values, but can't relate to you and feel out of touch with you and therefore are less likely to trust you.

(21,024 posts)by urban, identity politics. That isn't a criticism, it's just the way things are. But not every one identifies. Slanging those who don't just makes it worse. People get defensive and dig in their heels. The Republicans feed off that. They tap into the anger people feel. There's a lot to be angry about, and most of it seems to be out of reach. The GOP offers a simple explanation. It's the black guys fault; Hillary is a criminal. That crap sells really well when people are reacting rather than thinking, which seems to be the norm these days.

Mr. Pierce nails it:
If your outrage over the treatment of a crackpot goldbricking county clerk outweighs the possibility that your aging grandmother is going to die of a treatable illness then, well, I don't know what to say to you except good luck and enjoy your freedom.

(1,495 posts)PBO lost it by 22% in 2012. Why is everyone surprised by this, especially after Conway pulled a "Grimes" and ran away from PBO.

(755 posts)Not every state will have a Elizabeth Warren or a Bernie Sanders. You're going to need a Jack Conway or a John Breaux type in the South for the party to be alive. Right now, the Democratic Party is not a alive party in the states.
