Ben Carson: Archaeologists Are Wrong, The Pyramids Were Built To Store Grain

On edit: Ooophs, duped another thread: by kpete here. Let's discuss there since it was first up.

Did someone release a lot of stupid gas?
Are there people with no detectable critical reasoning?
Do some people talk without thinking just to hear their own voice?
The "big thinking" theme is immensely ironic.

Ben Carson: Archaeologists Are Wrong, The Pyramids Were Built To Store Grain
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ben-carson-pyramids
Tierney Sneed Nov 4, 2015

GOP frontrunner Ben Carson, in a 1998 commencement address, floated his own personal theory that the pyramids in Egypt were built by Joseph -- the biblical patriarch known for his coat of many colors -- to store grain, Buzzfeed reported.

In the speech -- given at Andrews University, a school with ties to Carson's Seventh-day Adventist faith -- the neurosurgeon shot down claim that aliens had built the pyramids. But he also disagreed with the archaeological consensus that the pyramids were constructed as tombs for the pharaohs.

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,” Carson said. “Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain.”

In response, I went to the Talk page for the Wikipedia article on the Great Pyramid and posted this query:

I am informed (via Facebook) that the design of the Great Pyramid was chosen based on knowledge of electromagnetism. In a nutshell: The Nile floods, water moves through the Pyramid through passages of different types of rock selected to carry the resulting electromagnetic charge, and the electricity is kept inside because the structure is sheathed in a nonconductor.

In a quick search I found references to one proponent of this theory but nothing on any reputable site -- I admit I didn't give it the full-court research press.

I'm 99.99% sure this is crackpottery, but if it's making the rounds on Facebook, is it worth debunking?

It's been five months and no one's responded, so I have nothing to add on the power plant theory. As a Wikipedia editor, I don't consider Dr. Carson's grain-storage theory to be worth mentioning in the article unless it gets a lot more attention, or maybe even a shred of supporting evidence.

The Wikipedia article states that "Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb...." but it doesn't mention mummies. Perhaps it was built for the purpose of being used as a tomb but plans changed, or perhaps any mummies were removed long ago; the article does describe extensive looting.

Autistic savant: A person with autism who is exceptionally gifted in a specialized field. That field may, for example, be mathematics. The autistic savant may be able to do rapid, complex mental calculations. Or the field may be music. The autistic savant may be able to perform a entire piece of music after hearing it only once.

He is just like that. Medical nerds can be different without being autistic.
I swear people should watch healing hands. He was a gifted child. Always hardworking and super self critical. Went through alot of adversity, racist teachers, not that great neighborhood.
His IQ is much higer than most people, even most people here, I know, I know, it's crazy.

I think he was a Democrat but dealt with things similar to Condeleeza Rice. Changed them and pused them away towards Republicans. One bad experience can push a person away.
Carson is very religious. Condi too I presume. Most blacks are. Abortion is not as revered in the black community as many think and for Carson that is a no go. Most of my family are very anti abortion. Very religious. I have more than one pastor in my family.

I hope people don't treeat Carson foul or say anymore racist things about him. It will push blacks away if they saw him called house negro or uncle tom like I saw going around about Herman Cain last time on other sites. I once had to post an op reminding that it's racist to call blacks uncle tom or aunt jemima, even if they are Republican! I think that was about Mia Love. If we see stuff like that we need to stop the person immediately.

Many black people find it racist to call Carson stupid since he is not and has an iq higher than most in america, even the person calling him stupid. Feel like nobody will give a black man credit for his accomplishments if they do not like his ways.

He IS stupid. He may be a savant in his professional field, but the man has NO grasp of history, a confusing if not absolutely broken view of political science, and he appears to not know a whole hell of a lot outside his technical field.

His political opinions on foreign policy, and women's health, let alone gay rights, makes him a shambling horror of a human being, and that's not racist to point out either. His brand of political malfeasance, dismissive asshole-ry, and his staggering stupidity are right at home among his peers; a veritable herd of white, male republicans.

Here's the litmus test; you take an article about some inane shit Carson has spewed, and you change the name to Ted Cruz, and ask a passer-by what they think, you won't get a different response than if it had said Ben Carson.

I'm with you on the directly racial insults, but don't lump 'this man is dangerously stupid' in the political realm, with 'this man is an uncle tom' as a character assassination.

Also, please do not bandy about "iq higher than most in america, even the person calling him stupid." as if his job performance proves a correlation with his specific IQ. That's as wild a swing in the dark as it would be for me to point out the statistical correlation between surgeons and psychopathy, as if that were a valid criticism of Carson as an individual. (See, "The Wisdom Of Psychopaths.&quot

He was always a gifted child and adult. Regardless of your opinion on his intelligence, he may be able to beat your scores in many areas. Being highly intelligent in the meducal feild tskes alot of study and practise, more than the average erson can even contemplate. Unless you score higher than him, then I really don't understand why you think he is stupid.

Bigotry and assholery has no bearing on ones intelligence. If republicans are so stupid, why do they beat us? Apparently we underestimate their intelligence and we get beaten by bigots and idiots.

My discussion of his IQ is because I actually have known about him for many years. He is well known in the black community and we are so so harsh in our judgements of him. We experirnce so much bigotry that we are used to dealing with forgiveness issues.

I know nothing of a connection between surgery and psycopathy besides reading a few articles. Do not underestimate Ben Carson.

idiot or not.

The IQ test doesn't measure creativity, curiosity, emotional capacity, it doesn't measure practical intelligence at all.

IQ changes too. He may have lost a good 20 points since he retired as a surgeon. Difficult to know since IQ is a static data point, not a 'level' attribute that can be relied upon.

There are children that can score over 100 on an IQ test, do they then have the capacity to sit and watch footage of other children mangled in war, or debate the nuts and bolts of abortion as a concept? No.

You invest too much in the concept of IQ, when you don't understand it, and I'm pretty sure you don't even know Carson's IQ to start with.

Gerrymandering, mostly.

Apparently we underestimate their intelligence and we get beaten by bigots and idiots.

OR, their platform appeals to voters who are bigots and idiots, and ours does not?

Post his IQ then. (I looked, doesn't appear to be public domain.)

I know nothing of a connection between surgery and psycopathy besides reading a few articles. Do not underestimate Ben Carson.

I don't underestimate him. I am scared of him. The narcissism and over-confidence that led him to call an entire scientific field 'wrong', and propose a bizarre religious explanation for the pyramids is an excellent example. Never mind that the pyramids have been examined by men and women who are exceptional performers in their own scientific field, none of that matters, Carson knows the truth, yes? He is a dangerous man, in the position of an executive. He is as narcissistic and dangerous as Trump, should either of them ever inhabit the Oval office. As a surgeon, that narcissism and confidence is a tool, something that can be tempered and used to great advantage. It's an asset and a talent, in that field. As an executive in charge of a nation, you really don't want someone in charge that doesn't take advice from others. Someone who pretends he knows the 'true' answer in other fields when mountains of fieldwork, research, analysis and competence all say something different.

Carson may be a savant in his field, but he's dangerously ignorant and over-confident outside that narrow field of expertise. If you don't like 'stupid' then substitute 'arrogantly ignorant'.

Especially the point about being black somehow equals being a natural democratic voter. Political philosophy does not correlate with skin color. There are very many poor whites who are conservatives for a variety of reasons, including religion. Many of these poor whites consistently vote against their economic interests on matters of social policy.

I also appreciate your point about not engaging in racist insults when talking about a non-white person who expresses conservative ideas. That is purely racism.

I am against abortion as a personal choice, and as a man who will never be in that position, but my personal feelings do not mean that I support restrictions on what is ultimately a woman's right to choose.

Biblical Fundamentalists will accept it--even though it's not exactly in the Bible. He will be challenged rather more by UFO believers and by some members of the Afrocentrist community.

Mainstream Egyptologists will probably stay out of it with the exception perhaps of the now unemployed Dr. Zahi Hawass a man who has never passed up a chance to speak in front of a camera. Though he actually is an expert on the Giza pyramids, he will be dismissed as a Muslim and anti-Semite. There are some Jews who also believe that their ancestors built the pyramids so they can join the fray.

The average American will no doubt do what they always do. Listen to soundbites and decide that one theory's as good as another, after all they weren't there and that a nice man like Ben Carson must have some good reasons for believing this--after all he is a doctor.

Ziggurauts in Sumeria were used to store grain. Joseph did not store grain in the tombs of pharoahs. Did he get that from watching Donny Osmond's musical? Because there is direct evidence based on excavations that refutes his view.

He's a Seventh Day Adventist, a follower of a religious sect that has predicted the end of the world repeatedly, believes the Pope is the antichrist, holds that Armegeddon will be signaled by the drying up of the Euphrates River and a final battle in Jerusalem and that true believers will be taken up in a raptuire to last 1000 years where the rest of us will be left in peace before the believers return to destroy us.

Carson is the dumbest "smart" person I've ever listened to. He knows nothing at all and has no intellectual curiosity. It's like his knowledge base comes from fringe shows on the history channel. He claims scientists think the pyramids were made by aliens like that is a common "scientists" belief and not a couple of nuts on history channel belief. Most published papers on the pyramids show exactly what scientists know about how the pyramids were made, why they were made, and how they were used. It not hard to find a good Egyptian book on the subject, heck it isn't even hard to see a good Egyptian history show on the history channel. This guy just wants to be stupid. I respect W more and more because he might be the lowest high point left in that party. They just seem to get dumber no matter the education level. Self induced stupid is the hardest to cure.

Yesterday, November 4, marked 93 years to the day that the tomb of King Tutankhamen was opened in Egypt, revealing spectacular artifacts and a magnificent mummy of the boy king. The celebration was somewhat marred, at least here in the U.S., by a leading Republican candidate for president, former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who confirmed a statement he’d made in 1998 — that he believes the Egyptian pyramids were grain silos, not tombs.

The collective reaction from archaeologists and historians, who have command of literally centuries’ worth of research into the artifacts and literature of the ancient Egyptians, is… Wait, what now?

Carson said in his 1998 talk at Andrews University, a Seventh-Day Adventist-affiliated university, “And when you look at the way that the pyramids were made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they’d have to be that way for various reasons. And various of scientists [sic] have said, ‘Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that’s how, you know, it doesn’t require an alien being when God is with you.’”
