I wonder about Paul Ryan too. One of the common attributes is telling lies even when there's no reason to. Adult children of alcoholics or really anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional home.

It's improved her quality of life, but she's still not quite her normal self, and often says things that seem a bit loopy. She's got no "internal filter" and sometimes just blurts things out without thinking.

On the other hand, his stories of youthful violence and his "redemption" may be why he is so popular with the "saved" community. There is nothing they are more in awe of than a formerly bad person being saved. I'll bet he's not the first person to lie his way into their favor.
