Because somebody has to be first through the door

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2015/11/17/this-is-the-battle-worn-shield-police-apparently-used-to-storm-the-bataclan-theater-in-paris/

The picture apparently shows a Brigades de Recherche et d’Intervention (BRI) officer’s heavy ballistic shield after storming the music venue. Dozens of bullet holes are present–presumably from one, or both of the gunmen’s Kalashnikov-style rifles that they reportedly had inside.

What bullet holes? It looks like there are collapsed bullets, so the shield was very effective. bobalew Nov 2015 #2

It's not actually a very powerful cartridge, for a rifle. Lizzie Poppet Nov 2015 #9

that the AK-47 is a weapon that should be in the hands of anyone with the $$ to buy it? It's a true military weapon with amazing punch and has no justifiable use in the civilian world (with the exception of law enforcement).

Yes, all American malls, schools, workplaces and homes are issues a shield like that. I keep mine right next to my vacuum cleaner.

Good fucking lord, go away.

I've owned one before.

Never had a desire to kill anyone with it.

Are you projecting the feelings you had when you owned one onto others?

Your average grandpa's hunting rifle delivers more muzzle energy than an AK-47. Not only did the shield do just fine but we have no idea on proximity or number of shots.

Like any true assault rifle, a Kalashnikov (as well as its semi-automatic civilian replicas) fires a medium-power cartridge. It's more powerful than most handgun rounds (by a lot), but a good bit less so than virtually any common hunting rifle round. The theory behind the smaller rounds is that a soldier can carry more of them.
