We're gonna get President Trump if the Clinton campaign doesn't stop talking to itself. I'm sure they all thought this was a true zinger. It isn't. Echoes of 2008 are still there. Get better.

(675 posts)For the majority of Americans who because of Republican policies can't save much for retirement.
The wage cap must be lifted, all earnings should contribute to the ss fund. Some sort of means testing will have to come into play sooner rather than later. Those fortunate enough to have substantial retirement income don't need social security, it's a waste of resources to pay it to them. I know this Is unpopular to some people on the left but drastic steps are going to be needed to preserve the program. Look how far wages have fallen, the average 20 year old is looking at a future of part time, minimum wage jobs with few benefits, how are they going to be able to save for retirement? The aren't. Asking young workers to pay into social security so some baby boomer with $1,000,000 in their IRA can collect a couple thousand from social security on top of his huge IRA payout is the recipe for revolution.

Denying government benefits to rich people just makes it that much harder for less than rich people to qualify. You know, eligibility, forms, a bureaucracy to determine that eligibility, etc.
It will make it much easier to attack SS if people who pay in get no benefits back.

(675 posts)Asking minimum wage workers to support millionaires through collection of ss taxes is a recipe for social unrest and revolution. The workers aren't going to stand for it and soon it will come to a head.
The social contract is broken, no matter what the so called experts say he system is broken and unsustainable. Young workers will pay into a system they see as hopeless and unfair. Believe me, this is going to be a huge issue and from the looks of it most on our side are lining up with the wealthy over the working class.

(33,618 posts)Wealth has been redistributed to the wealthy, from Reagan on.
Raising the cap will make sure everyone pays in.
Which will also ensure there is $ for those young workers when they retire.
the top 5% or 1% of the country also receiving SS will not mean workers are paying for millionaies, it means it is a fair system that treats all the same.

(675 posts)A single mother in her 20s should have her wealth redistributed to a retired millionaire.
The ONLY reason democrats oppose means testing SS is fear of losing votes, cowards.

He is so right. Means testing SS and Medicare is wrong, the way to go is raising the tax cap.
Hilary needs to stop this nonsense. Especially since the rich mostly send their kids to Private Colleges, which free State Universities won't effect.

(25,966 posts)We aren't saving anything by wasting a bunch of resources to somehow prevent 1% of the population from using government benefits. And it isn't really even morally wrong if they use them. They paid into the system, they get the benefits.

(33,618 posts)they are paying for them, in the form of higher taxes.
In fact i would say the reason education has become so expensive is the States decided (sometime around Reagan) that they will turn the cost from the taxpayers to the students. Lower the taxes, especially on the wealthy, soak the students.

(23,367 posts)I think it was during the Reagan administration that Means-Testing was applied to V.A. benefits.
But, no problem Hillary, go ahead and piss off the seniors and near-seniors.
Obama just did it with the Social Security File&Suspend shenanigans, and nobody said anything.
