100-year-old casts vote Saturday

BATON ROUGE - A one-hundred year old man braved unfriendly weather Saturday to cast a ballot in the statewide governor's race.

Willie Johnson has been voting since the law allowed him to vote, after the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since, he has made sure to participate in the election process.

"His parents were in slavery, and he says it is important, all of us, to get out and vote. Your vote does count," his daughter said in an interview with WBRZ reporter Natalia Verdina.

Saturday, he walked slowly through Park Elementary and into a voting booth.

"He takes his time and reads his bible... he prays... and then he comes on out and votes," his daughter added.

"Get out and vote, please," Johnson said with the wise, tattered voice, of an aged man. "It's for the betterment of the whole state. That's what we need... a better government."

Saturday, voters across Louisiana elect a governor, lt. governor, and attorney general. Numerous local races are decided, too. Click here for election results.
