I don't believe that there are enough crazy and/or ignorant people in America to get Trump to the White House.
But I do believe their are enough to get Ted Cruz there. A coalition of hard-core "Christians," together with "know-nothings" and those who would never vote for anyone other than a Republican, might comprise a bloc of voters just large enough to let Cruz slip in.
The only difference between Trump and Cruz is that Cruz is more familiar with electoral politics. He knows how to agree with Trump's poison without appearing to be totally bonkers. He knows how to use dog whistles while appearing to keep his skirts clean. The only thing he doesn't know is how to recruit allies in the U.S. Senate. He's the most hated man there. He's one mean-spirited, unlikable son-of-a-bitch. But so was Richard Nixon and that didn't stop him from reaching the Oval Office.
And even if Cruz doesn't quite make it, there's still bad news just behind him: Marco Rubio. This guy is another "not ready for prime time candidate" who stands to inherit the GOP mantle if or when Trump/Cruz fail. Both of them make Rubio seem like a reasonable alternative. He's not. He's a somewhat unseasoned political dwarf who can easily be led by any "experts" he surrounds himself with.
And let's not forget Jeb! Or rather, perhaps we should just forget Jeb!, the Fredo of the Bush family.
I guess the bottom line is that, after our endless war here on DU ends, and either Bernie or Hillary is our candidate, we must win the upcoming election. The alternative is unthinkable. Republicans will be out there voting in huge numbers. We must do the same.

As for the rest of them, I think they will say or do anything that they think their voters want to hear. I doubt they believe most of it, but they'll sell their souls for dime. And they are among the worst of the worst this country has ever produced in the political arena.

(33,688 posts)Trump is a Mussolini wannabe - a loudmouthed blowhard resembling nothing so much as an evil Fred Flintstone. Carson belongs in a maximum security nuthouse and the others are almost as crazy as those two. The fascism is right out in the open now. But.....
Cruz is deadly dangerous. He is a pure psychopath/sociopath.
He lies with a glibness that is genuinely terrifying and the only real question about him is whether he actually believes the abject insanity he spouts. If he doesn't that proves positively he's a psychopath/sociopath in the and if he does he is just plain nuts - as in 90%+ completely detached from anything resembling reality.
He is dangerous as hell in either case.
Actually he reminds me a lot of a lesser known serial killer named Ed Kemper. Kemper, a highly intelligent psychopath, liked to hang out with his cop buddies at a bar frequented by the schweinerei. He pulled into the place one night to sink a few beers with his good buds on the force. The head of his most recent victim was in his trunk.
Cruz is THAT kind of crazy. Himmler crazy.

(63,221 posts)not the slightest bit religious (no matter what he claims) and therefore not in league with the "true believers" in the republican party. I think Trump is a lot of talk, but I don't see him making radical policy changes like the fundies would.

(20,885 posts)Trump is the one Republican that might be less reactionary than some Democrats, on some issues. I don't believe (or disbelieve) things he says. That works in his favor on certain match ups.

(4,221 posts)I would crawl fifty miles bare-kneed across broken glass carrying 150 pounds on my back in order to vote against Ted Cruz.
Both dangerous, both oblivious, both narcissistic and mean. But Cruz is at an altogether quantum level above Trump with his type of zealotry and viciousness that scares the bleep out of me.

(675 posts)In the event Trump wins the election does President Obama have a responsibility to prevent Trump from assuming the office? President Obama took an oath to uphold the constitution but isn't there also an oath to protect the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic? Millions of Americans believe Trump and his ilk are domestic enemies unfit for office. I think Obama would have a legitimate basis to deny the transfer of power. I know this sounds crazy but the thought of having Trump in charge is too horrible of a possibility to allow, it would mean the end of our Republic, a thugocracy, a 21st century fascist state. President Obama would have justification because of Trumps intentions to deprive certain people basic human rights based on race and religion.
