.... (excuse the expression) going on.

At the risk of sounding simplistic..... my take is that the "islamic world" has a fundamental inferiority complex that festers beneath the level of language. They don't recognize it themselves.

They never industrialized. Europe did, America did. So the ME, like Africa and almost all of Asia became quickly conquered and colonized.

In many ways they're still subjugated. At best.... they are at the mercy of the foreign policy whims of the west.

The bloated, bellicose religious rhetoric is a way to vent. They are enraged by their military and economic impotence and dependence on and inferiority to the west. Not by Allah, Muhammed or any of that jazz. That's metaphor.

And why wouldn't they be enraged?

That "they hate our freedom" is a straw man the right uses to get their base excited. They could just as easily say "they want to take away your guns".

How about a good long look in the mirror. You don't have to hate yourself to realize that you could be making better decisions.

...without excusing Middle East terrorists. Overthrowing a democratically elected prime minister in Iran, defending Israel even when she is wrong. I've always thought the "hate our freedom" bit was rather silly. I do think our Middle eastern policies were for a very long time rather misguided. Unless the purpose was only to insure a plentiful supply of cheap oil.

Racheal Maddow showed an excerpt from ISIS's glossy propaganda magazine. In it, ISIS explains why they attacked Paris. Finally, an answer! Was it because of Western policy? No... they "brought Paris to its knees" because France showed "conceit in the face of Islam." That's it. That's the justification, from the horse's mouth. I'm sort of done apologizing or making excuses for the actions of terrorists.

Seems to me that is you love yourself you want to do what is best.

I subscribe to the saying that the unexamined life is not worth living...and that should apply to a nation as well.

They are undeniable but they leave out another reason that they hate us. That 5th reason is because their ideology tells them to hate us because we do not follow their ideology. Oh sorry replace ideology with religion, same thing to me really, both are different words for a set of ideas. How do we know this 5th is part of the problem? BECAUSE THEY TELL US SO. They openly declare religious reasons for their actions. One terrorist group is literally named for it: Boko Haram. Which literally means Rejection of the non-Muslim.

It's true that the West has done all of those things. But even if the US/EU hadn't, would there still be hatred for the West? Maybe. It's an important question & I don't think blaming the US totally answers it.
