Islam is pretty darned non-materialistic in tenet and action. Eid Al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan is about giving and is a time of celebration, but I'd personally be stretched to compare it to what Christmas has become. But then, as much as I love the holiday season, I've become increasingly cynical about the commercialism that has overwhelmed the occasion.

Aha! That explains why the West hates it so much.

If I recall correctly, the Quran condemns usury more than any other "immoral act."

The rise in prices without a corresponding increase in wages throughout the 20th century (and beyond) combined with the proliferation of credit, no moral stigma attached to interest rates and debt, and full on advertising/marketing assault, is an ideal recipe for Western wanton consumerism to become a tool of economic oppression.

In which, in lieu of interest, the bank takes an ownership interest in the enterprise to which it lends.

Of course, that would bring Shari'a law to America!!!1!11!!!1!!111!!
