Anonymous torments ISIS with 'Rickrolls'

The Rick Roll is back in a big way!

http://www.sfgate.com/weird/article/Anonymous-torments-ISIS-with-rickrolls-6652449.php

Anonymous is wielding a new weapon of mass disruption in its ongoing social media war with the Islamic State — Rick Astley videos.

The "hacktivist" group has been flooding all pro-Isis hashtags with countless videos of the red-headed bass-baritone, according to a recent tweet from the #OpParis account.

Anyone familiar with 1980s music videos knows how unsettling watching Astley sing and dance can be. In fact, as Dazed notes, tricking people to watch his "Never Gonna Give You Up" has been a staple of viruses, protests and other online pranks since 2007....

Whenever some Islamic State account attempts to spread a message or try to get a topic trending, the subject with be barraged with Rick videos from the late '80s.

I saw an interview of Rick Astley several years ago where they brought up the "rick-rolled" meme. He was aware of it and was pretty cool about the whole thing. He just laughed it off with an attitude of "hey, it gets my song exposure"

Back about 7 years ago whenever my gf and I were getting ready for a friday night of partying we would play music while getting dressed and I always had "Never gonna give you up" thrown in the play list randomly. She found it hilarious... good times being young

...to avoid having to hear even one Slim Whitman song. When "Mars Attacks" came out I thought I must be part Martian, because while my head didn't explode when he sang MY BRAIN TURNED TO JELLO! It took me days to recover and assume non-vegetative status.

They sold his albums on tv commercials during the 1970's for a long time. My voice hadn't changed yet, so I used to sing along when one of the commercials came on. Drove my parents nuts. Slim must have made a killing selling those records, considering how long he bought air time to sell them.

It could be worse, like Village People recordings. Or a Donald Trump campaign speech. Or a Thomas Kincaid slideshow.
