Dallas neighborhood on “lock-down” after 12 antigay hate crimes

If anyone here is in Dallas, please, please, please be carful!

A neighborhood in Dallas has been put on police lock-down after a dozen violent hate crimes against gay men and several robberies were reported.

The city’s Oak Lawn gayborhood has seen a frightening uptick in antigay bashings in recent months.

Last Thursday, Geoffrey Hubbard (pictured) became at least the twelfth victim in three months of an antigay hate crime when he was bashed him in the skull with a rock while walking to a friend’s house. He sustained a temporal bone fracture that required several stitches to his head.

Rally for Change, a local organization, has been demanding increased police presence and better protection in the area for months.

“Survivors have been beaten with bats, stabbed with box cutters, pistol whipped and pummeled with fists,” the organization said in a statement. “In several of these attacks, homophobic language has been used by the assailants.”

oh wait, but it WILL

Gayborhood is that a phrase the people themselves use for their neighborhood or is it a homophobic slur?

I presume the former.

I lived near Cedar Spring and Oak Lawn and it was very commercial with some nice modest neighborhoods mixed in. I like it in that I could ride my bike everywhere...

I'm really sad to hear about these attacks, but I'm also really happy to encounter the hilarious word "gayborhood" for the first time. That's great.

I hope the cops do increase their vigilance for this kind of hate crime.

Thanks for sharing this.

as the gayborhood in Dallas. The hookup code in Dallas for making a proposition is to ask whether you've been to JR's or Sue Ellen's since they are two of the more notorious bars in the gayborhood.

over the past few months and if I recall correctly back into last year. The assault victims have been brutally beaten and I hope that the police can get the situation under control. They advise people to avoid walking alone, particularly on the side streets in that neighborhood which are poorly lit at night. That neighborhood does have its share of homeless and drug addicts wondering around so it has been a crime magnet for decades; however, it seems to have gotten much worse recently.
