http://www.theroot.com/articles/news/2015/11/half_of_young_black_expect_to_live_past_their_30s.htmlAccording to the Huffington Post, two out of three whites were optimistic about living past 35, compared with just 50 percent of young blacks. Some Hispanic groups were more pessimistic. Only 46 percent of U.S.-born Mexican Americans believe that theyll reach 35. It drops to 38 percent for Mexican-born immigrants.
Were attributing this (pessimism) to structural disadvantages, exposure to neighborhood poverty and family poverty, exposure to violence, said Tara Warner, a co-author of the study. We also discuss in the paper experiences with the criminal justice system, experiences or expectations with police violence.
Warner told the Huffington Post that the survey has been conducted since 1994 but is the first to look at the survival expectations differently by race, ethnicity and nativity.

(51,308 posts)I used to say that all the time when I was younger.
Irritated the crap out of my mom.
Most youngsters just cannot even conceive of life past 30.
I'm WAY older now.

(1,439 posts)About 97.5% black 15 year olds live to 35. The number is 98.3% for whites. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that these are approximately all-time highs.
Also, this reporting sucks so bad. I mean, I bet everybody thinks this is current data. (Hint: not even close.)
So I'll take back that "kids are dumb" comment because really, it's the reporting that's dumb. The males in the study had a 3.4% expectation of not being alive at 35 (which is the only possible meaning of "doubt they'll live..." , and consisted of 22% black males. If half of black males actually doubted that they would live past 35 then the reported total MUST be greater than 11%. It's clearly nowhere near that.
