that Medellin, Colombia is a cheap place to live. (Lived in Medellin for 20 years and go back every year or so). I'm not sure what the author is basing that premise on, but for anyone expecting to have a lifestyle more or less commensurate with what they are accustomed to in the U.S. the cost in Medellin is going to be significantly higher. Food and clothing are easily more than 100% higher than the equivalent here. Utilities are charged based on the socio-economic level of their location so nice residential areas have much higher utility rates (the suggestion that a 'small apartment on the outskirts of town for $400 US a month may sound enchanting, but it's in an area where an American wouldn't last 48 hours). Restaurants are again much more expensive at each price level than their American counterparts (with the possible exception of the working-class places which offer the regional favorite, the $3 'Bandeja Paisa' (a wonderful, gut-busting cholesterol-raising heartburn inducing combination of rice, red beans, blood sausage, fried pork belly, potato, plantain and avocado with a fried egg on top!). If you're not born to it or already accustomed you definitely won't be making it your dinner every day. Medellin is a wonderful city with exceptional people and a great climate (although it's much hotter now) but it's not a bargain place for an expat to live.
