I hope everyone had way too much to eat yesterday, and that your fridge runneth over with leftovers!
Now set all that warm fuzziness aside - today is Black Friday, a tradition for patriotic Americans where we trample complete strangers (regardless of race, creed, or color) to score the best deals on cheaply made, overpriced junk from China or Korea, exactly one day after proclaiming how thankful we are for what we already have.
Happy Holiday

While I dislike the whole concept of "door busters" and consumerism, there are other sides to Black Friday.
Including the employees who will be getting a paycheck.

(1,210 posts)there are much better sales throughout the year.
And honestly there is nothing wrong with being poor and not buying your clothing at inflated/marked down prices - going to thrift shops and getting clothing there is a great way to get some good clothing and often there are new items to be had. And why does everyone feel the need to spend what they don't have so they can give someone a gift - be honest, tell them what is happening and give what you can afford.
As for the employees who will be getting a paycheck - wow how very Donald Trump of you.

(1,210 posts)There is a big difference between essential employees who knew that going in. Retail employees are not "essential" and are paid low wages for putting up with crap.

I went out to eat breakfast this morning. I assume the store was happy I was there and the waiter.
You have not put much thought into this I assume.

(55,894 posts)As someone who has done various parts of retail over many years, Christmas is often what got me a 2 more months of paychecks before unemployment kicked in until Spring.
-I worked at a plant nursery that did Christmas after all the plant material was done for the growing season.
And besides the shop aspect, there were all the delivery jobs, decorating etc. that centered around Christmas.

(1,210 posts)One day is all we are asking for - one measly day.
Retail workers are now are expected to come in earlier and earlier on Thanksgiving Day and shoppers are now eager to shop on TG day let alone Black Friday. Yes, you can find deals but why can't the stores do these deals actually on BF (or the weekend following TG) and open normally? It would be good for the minimum wage workers who could actually have some time with their families? People would still shop and over-consume so the stores will not lose out.

(51,076 posts)we got a hell of a deal on a front load washer and dryer combo. We were up and at 'm at 4:30, no pushing and shoving just walked in paid and pulled around to the loading dock and were eating breakfast by 5:30 that morning.
It was a deal too good to pass up.
