(13,390 posts)I am less certain of the word extremist lately, though. I feel sure that he, or one of the many other violently hateful (now well represented in US government) might have been the guy in front of me in the checkout line at the grocery store today. May have been on the bus with me or just passed in traffic.
Fox, et al have assured us that those ideas are readily available in our homes. These people hide in plain site within our mainstream existance.

(17,505 posts)No kidding.
My redneck, Fox Newsie neighbors (whom I have nothing to do with) were yelling and cussing at the top of their lungs, again, today...for like a solid hour or more. Why were they at each other? Someone left the gate open. Did the dog get out? No. Did some Democrat sneak in and give them health care? Of course not! It's just the gate was left open...with no consequences. They cussed and went on for everyone to hear like they had been robbed or something.
It's just constant anger...at every little thing that may not be the way they want it. Grown children having a tantrum over nothing..... ready to go to blows... or with guns. Constant irrational anger. I see it all the time. Someone on the bike trail behind my apt. was freaking out and yelling into their cell phone later... until they were so far down the path I couldn't hear them any more.
Their cussing isn't even creative. Just F bombs every other word.
Shut up already. Calm down! Go listen to some classical music or something. Jesus!

(2,067 posts)The content of your original post is what said he wasn't a thug. But by refusing to call him a thug simply because the right uses the word a different way, aren't you actually validating their use of it?
Aren't we better off just claiming the word back instead of letting them define it for all of us?

(21,317 posts)Some mentally ill people are very susceptible to the fear-mongering of right-wing political propaganda. Throw in religiously inspired delusions and you have a very potent mixture for right wing inspired violence.

(61,695 posts)Maybe RW conservatism is a mental illness. But I'm not willing to give him a pass on premeditated murder based on what little information we have right now. Hate is real, not classified as a mental illness. This was terrirism, and I don't want him written off and their motives ignored because he's mentally unstable.

(3,919 posts)his defense. congratulations.
he is a murderer and a thug. planned it. knew exactly what he was going to do. and, further, as a self directed "outlier", he was under no one's political agenda. he acted on his own.

(21,317 posts)I don't like violent extremists any more than you do, but I think it is unfortunate that the situation has become so polarized that we can't even contemplate the possibility that these people can be delusional, if there is a political aspect to the crime.
I don't think his defence lawyer will be using my post in his trial.
