It made me cry. Uncontrollable crying. The wife in the picture just said she wanted to spend another night beside her husband.

(49,991 posts)The night before the burial of her husbands body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of Cat, and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it, she said. I think thats what he would have wanted.

Todd Heislers Final Salute was named by PDNOnline readers one of the most influential photo essays of the past ten years in a survey conducted for PDNs Visions of the Decade issue. While a staff photographer at the Rocky Mountain News, Heisler (now at The New York Times) spent a year documenting the work of Major Steve Beck and the Marine Honor Guard who handle family notifications and the funerals of Marines killed during the Iraq War. At a time when the Pentagon barred photographers from covering the return of military caskets to Dover Air Force Base, Heislers Final Salute provided a rare and intimate look at the dignity of military funeral rites.

(45,851 posts)We've got nothing as a nation out of Iraq or Afghanistan except blood, sweat and tears but plenty of politicians have made their careers and their fortunes off sending our children out to slaughter and be slaughtered.
I for one will never forgive them as long as I draw breath.
