...was the vast, windy, nationwide sigh of relief as it became clear that SOMEONE involved was very likely BROWN.
I am so fucking ashamed of my skin color, the unthinking privilege I was raised in, and the mindless self-congratulatory weaseling that is being done in my alleged interests...

(3,447 posts)...breathe a sigh of relief so their preferred constituents don't come under fire. It's disgusting, but it is what it is.
That you're ashamed of your skin color, though, is another thing of passing note. Those aren't normal thoughts, and they don't show up without being put there. Perhaps you might consider being more critical of the media you consume because it's poisoning you.

Meanwhile, over on CNN, poor Don Lemon was just lost as usual, bless his heart.

(14,177 posts)Muslim also doesn't mean Islam was the motive. Sure it's more likely it is the motive if that person is Muslim. I's kinda like saying Christianity is the motive for Christians to kill people when all you know is a murderer is Christian.

(3,839 posts)Seaport. Malays and Indonesians aren't brown. Neither are the people in Brunei.
The Uyghurs and Hui Chinese are Muslims too, they aren't brown. Neither are the Muslims in Southern Thailand and Southern PI.

(78,249 posts)It seems that Muslims are not permitted the mental health excuse. What these people did was flat out crazy--dropping of their six month old child with grandma and getting dressed up in their combat gear and doing a commando style raid on a group of innocent people. It that's not crazy, I don't know what is.

(26,060 posts)planned this was, tactical clothing, long guns, pipe bombs - I don't think crazy (I'm not even sure what crazy covers). Religious extremism is not mental illness - they know exactly what they're doing and they know it's wrong but feel entitled to do it in the name of their religion. It's people trying to instill fear in others through violence. That's not mental illness.

(3,660 posts)The only people breathing a sigh of relief are those that like to prop up right winger gun arguments and the typical pro NRA crowd. Most people know what the vast majority of innocent Muslim's are in store for in the coming days and weeks. At least some groups earlier were taking the proactive reaction to call for those in this country who like to associate one persons actions with an entire group to please show restraint. Lets hope that some other people can use that same understanding when this story gets it's full legs in the coming days.

(2,884 posts)Do you "fucking feel ashamed of their skin color, and the unthinking privilege Pakistanis Muslims are raised in"?
The issue is not race, it's religious ideology.
(PS: the Christian ideology had a role in the Planned Parenthood murders)
cascadiance
(19,537 posts)... by some parts of that society too. That was why there was the split of that region into countries like Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh with different religious majorities in control of each region.
And it is also the warping of religious ideology in all of these different cases (whether it is Muslim extremism in 9/11, ISDS and other Muslim terrorist acts, or Planned Parenthood murders, KKK terrorism, etc. for Christian extremism too). It is more of a call to action of those of us in society that look for secular solutions, or at least calling on the history of the good teachings of each of these religions to unite behind solutions that work for all of us and don't allow extremists of any of these religions to try to make the case that they represent these religions with their extreme actions, and that they should be regarded as the bloodthirsty criminal deviants that they are!
Yorktown
(2,884 posts)Yes, by all means, I agree with you to "unite behind solutions that work for all of us and don't allow extremists of any of these religions to try to make the case that they represent these religions with their extreme actions".
But we should aso work to stem the flow of extremists. And extremists are born of extreme preachings. Evangelicals cursing violently the Planned Parenthood or Imams cursing western democracy must be taken to account.

People sometimes want these shootings to be because of the things they dislike. See, it was a white guy! See, it was a Muslim! If you're on the right side of that, you get to throw it in your opponents face and call them idiots. Maybe it gives meaning to an otherwise random act in an uncaring universe. You get to be on the right side, and say see, see what happens because of the things you believe in. You like guns? Look what happens because of that! You like immigration and multi-culturalism? Look what happens because of that!
