Bail was set at $1 million Thursday for the self-professed founder of the South Family gang, who is charged with being a felon in possession of a handgun.

If convicted, Terry Barfield, 49, would face an enhanced sentence of 20 years to life in prison. Barfield also will be charged as a habitual criminal, which could enhance the minimum sentence he must serve if convicted, said Jim Masteller, an assistant prosecutor with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office.

Barfield would have to post $100,000 to be released from custody.

Masteller told Judge Thomas Harmon that Barfield met at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with a undercover ATF agent near 144th Street and West Maple Road. Barfield is accused of paying $145 and receiving a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun.
