(NaturalNews) A significant health freedom victory has taken place in the European nation of Poland, where all plantings of Monsanto's MON810, a genetically-modified (GM) variety of maize (corn) that produces its own built-in Bt insecticide in every kernel, have been officially banned.
The decision comes after thousands of protesters recently took to the streets in demonstration of the undeniable fact that both MON810 and the chemicals applied to it are at least partially responsible for causing Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the worldwide phenomenon in which entire swarms of honey bees disappear or turn up dead.
"The decree is in the works. It introduces a complete ban on the MON810 strain of maize in Poland," said Polish Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki, who also explained to the press that pollen from MON810 appears to be responsible for further devastating the already dwindling bee population throughout the country and elsewhere.
According to reports, Poland's decision to ban MON810 makes it the first nation to formally acknowledge that Monsanto's GM corn is definitively linked to CCD. It also affirms the findings of several earlier studies that have identified a link between Bt GM crops and bee deaths, including independent research conducted by Pennsylvania beekeeper John McDonald.

(47,675 posts)I think they've found their safe haven and are using it. On the other hand, nobody else has much for them to gather pollen from in the first place - no clover, no dandylions, no flowers, no vegetables, just homogeneous and regularly groomed lawns with weekly applications of lime and poison.

(47,675 posts)We have bluebirds and others that hunt in our yard. We've got rabbits EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE in our yard. We had to train the dogs to ONLY chase the rabbits if they were in or very close to the garden. Otherwise the things would be running all day.
So the poison trucks show up regularly at the other houses. They have to put up little warning flags because the shit is so toxic. The abundance of nitrogen mixed in with the poison forces the neighbors to mow weekly or more often. Come August, all of the lawns are brown except for ours. The poison trucks still show up and plaster the other yards with death and nitrogen. The lawns turn green for a few hours and then go dormant again. Our yard is about the same color all year round, well, except for the flowers that show up throughout the summer.
They also mow too close to the ground. There's no strength in that grass. There's a book called something about "The Lawn Weenies" that sums it up perfectly. We are surrounded by lawn weenies, but nobody objects to free asparagus and other fresh veggies and herbs. We're the ones who have them. We're the ones with the bees. The bees don't bother anyone.
When I was a kid, every yard had clover and dandylions and every yard was covered in bees. Walking barefoot was dangerous. Now we announce the presence of one so we can carefully avoid disturbing it. With all of our various plants, I would say we easily have fifty or more species of bees ranging from fruit-fly sized to monster bumbles. They leave us alone. We leave them alone. Our yard is their sanctuary.

(292 posts)many of my friends take that approach. I can't wait to have my own place again so I can have a proper garden. Its actually one of the main factors calling me back to Florida. -Though many here (MD) do very well.
(Didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with your using a mower. It was more a comment about our decisions in general)

(1,055 posts)Bees rear their young on pollen and corn pollen is a particular favorite. Once the brood are fed the pollen, a stress is introduced. I'm sure some of the brood will succumb even if the Bt is small doses in pollen but you cannot escape that added stress.
When you add even more stress such as varoa mites, tracheal mites, and Nosema the bees become susceptible to viruses.
When a bee gets sick form a virus, instinctively the bee leaves the hive and does not return to keep the virus from spreading.
Hence, colony collapse disorder where the bees are gone but there are not bodies

(19,362 posts)It shows that when it comes down to it
the FDA and US has been shoving the GM Modified down everyones throats
and now has shown to kill the bees ...heading them to extinction
The US is not the Best or the Brightest here
In fact the US is a corporate evildoer and supporter of Bee killing
God Bless Poland
I believe this may be another reason the European Union will be dismantled gladly by the populace
It is all about the Bees

Monsanto is so powerful that they managed to put their man inside the Obama White House as the Secretary of Agriculture.
Google: "Vilsack ties to Monsanto"
Roger Beachy, former director of the Monsanto-funded Danforth Plant Science Center, is now the director of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Islam Siddiqui, Vice President of the Monsanto and Dupont-funded pesticide-promoting lobbying group, CropLife, is now the Agriculture Negotiator for the U.S.
Trade Representative. Rajiv Shah former agricultural-development director for the pro-biotech Gates Foundation (a frequent Monsanto partner), served as Obama's USDA Under-Secretary for Research Education and Economics and Chief Scientist and is now head of USAID.
Elena Kagan, who, as President Obama's Solicitor General, took Monsanto's side against organic farmers in the Roundup Ready alfalfa case, is now on the Supreme Court.
Ramona Romero, corporate counsel to DuPont, has been nominated by President Obama to serve as General Counsel for the USDA.

...Organic production is a vital part of his strategy to revive rural America, Vilsack said. "Organic producers are very entrepreneurial in nature," he said. "They're in a position to create value-added products that provide a wealth of opportunities in rural America."
<...>
Vilsack noted that the Obama administration had put organics into the Agriculture Department's strategic plan, established an organic office with its own deputy administrator, and invested $39 million in research and development on projects such as novel cover crop mixtures -- which reduces loss of nitrogen -- and organic weed control. It is using another $32.5 million in federal money for indirect support for organics through farmers' markets and other programs. It also put $50 million in environmental quality incentives program money into 1,400 projects benefiting the organic industry.
The Organic Trade Association received Vilsack politely.
One organic advocate said that the industry appreciates the Obama administration's organic effort, but would like to figure out how to strengthen its position within the administration when officials have to deal with the State Department and other agencies that have argued that the U.S. government must take a strong position in favor of biotechnology to protect the traditional U.S. advocacy of science-based decision making in trade relations.
WikiLeaks Cables Reveal U.S. Sought to Retaliate Against Europe over Monsanto GM Crops
Thursday, December 23, 2010
U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks reveal the Bush administration drew up ways to retaliate against Europe for refusing to use genetically modified seeds. In 2007, then-U.S. ambassador to France Craig Stapleton was concerned about Frances decision to ban cultivation of genetically modified corn produced by biotech giant Monsanto. He also warned that a new French environmental review standard could spread anti-biotech policy across Europe. We speak with Jeffrey Smith of the Institute for Responsible Technology. [includes rush transcript]
I liked your video of candidate Obama on GMO labeling. What happened the instant the WH organic garden was publicized? Guess who was in charge of promoting biotechnology at the State Department? Google that name with Chomsky and your hair might turn white.

(4,959 posts)7th GMO free Europe Conference 2012
Save the date!
We have the pleasure to announce that our 7th GMO free Europe Conference will take place on the 4th and 5th of September in Brussels. At the invitation of the Green group we will meet in the European Parliament on Wednesday 5th. On Tuesday 4th we will start our meeting in the afternoon at Mundo-B for preparatory meetings and workshops.
The onslaught will be predictably relentless. Think Greece, Japan, India, France, more. I found the website above just now by googling greece gmos (alternatively japan gmos, france gmos, etc).
