Sponsors, locals agree on Confederate Flag terms in future parades (NC)

NEWTON – The Soldiers Reunion Parade and Confederate Flag use would continue as a tradition, according to a press release distributed at Tuesday night’s Newton City Council meeting ...

Jerry McCombs, president of the Catawba County NAACP, said the resolution reached was a good step forward, but that he still wants to see more progress made toward the eventual elimination of the flag.

"I see the flag and it's very offensive to me," McCombs said. "We think it's very disrespectful. We're here to let the city know that we disagree, and we will continue to fight until it's out of the parade" ...

Mayor Anne Stedman made it clear that the City of Newton can take no further action regarding the flag's appearance in the reunion, pointing out that the city is not a sponsor of the parade or activities ...
