...to stifle someone's speech/opinion/comment that does not violate TOS but does offend some people?

(45,251 posts)My point is not about you in the least, but about the "consensus" of hosts in certain groups.

(37,748 posts)The pretense of confusion certainly allows another mechanism from which to rationalize boorish and intolerant buffoonery as sincere and progressive.

(14,400 posts)I've seen some really pathetic crap being alerted on, usually because the alerter isn't happy with the tone of someone not supporting their candidate. If enough fellow travelers are on the jury off it goes.

(3,595 posts)My feelings are if a post offends you, get a life.
The two posts I voted to ban, one was overtly racist (I am a honkey) and the other was a direct attack on another poster.

(9,463 posts)...violate DU's TOS. When I got my email thanking me for my jury service, the thread was hidden anyway and, based on the explanations given, was hidden because people didn't like the person's comment, not because it violated TOS.

(26,582 posts)The admins enforce the TOS and the hosts enforce the forum/groups SOP.
So something could not be against the TOS and still be hidden. This is why Skinner says "don't push your luck".

I'm always confused why long time members don't understand the purpose of the jury system.

(1,937 posts)ummm me...i read that pretty much every other time i get called for J.Duty
it's not a bad idea to refresh the mind.
'Jury duty' (any sort) as well as 'informed voting' is a civic responsibility (even in a small community (and realistically DU is a small community) that's 'only' online)
It has to be remembered that behind each post is a keyboard, and at that keyboard sits a human (in some cases cat's though :-p )with feelings and hopes.
that being said
It is the responsibility of all DU members to participate on our discussion forums in a manner that promotes a positive atmosphere and encourages good discussions among a diverse community of people holding a broad range of center-to-left viewpoints. Members should refrain from posting messages on DU that are disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
not really complex base rules

since many people have sigline disabled...this once i'll paste mine in here

(19,567 posts)That's what a jury decides, not TOS. TOS is up to the site admins, and personal choices on if a post violates the community standards (see above) here are up to juries.
