LINCOLN A draft state policy was advanced Wednesday on the participation of transgender students in high school sports and other activities that one of the authors said reflected the "Midwestern values" of the state.
The proposal from the Nebraska School Activities Association puts the initial decisions in the hands of parents and local school districts.
It would also require a "rigorous" process that takes into consideration hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery before a transgender student would be allowed to participate in sports.
Some states require only statements from parents or a physician to attest to a childs gender identity.
