(23,156 posts)Just carrying a gun doesn't an active shooter make, or we'd be able to arrest all those idiots out there who carry guns into supermarkets and restaurants.

(23,156 posts)if he hasn't fired any shots, he's not shooting, therefore he's not an active shooter.
"Armed man, thought to be dangerous, rams barricade" would be far more accurate. Now if this guy opens fire, then we've got an active shooter.
As much as I abhor the guns and the gun violence in this country, using the language precisely and correctly would be helpful.

(118,731 posts)gun. He's threatened the campus with his truck and with a gun in his hands. People need to take cover. Or they might get shot. He's an active shooter.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)with a gun an active shooter, after a while "active shooter" will be meaningless.
Words really do matter. If he hasn't fired any shots, he's not an active shooter.
Armed man on campus seems more appropriate.
Same precautions would be called for.

(18,318 posts)someone was breaking into a car, then ran off. A witness thought he might have a gun. No shots fired, probably a common punk doing his criminal work.

(82,849 posts)This good, responsible, law-abiding citizen is simply out exercising some very important constitutional rights, and we can't jump to any conclusions about what he might be doing until he's already done it. And even then, we can't know for sure, even if he makes a direct statement to the police or in open court about his motives. Mustn't rush to judgment; wouldn't be prudent and sensible.
Now, let me tell you what a great plan Donald Trump has for stopping every Muslim from coming into the United States, and how he's going to deport 12 million people cost-free.

(118,731 posts)rammed his truck into a barrier at a college campus is an active shooter. It tells the students and the police a description of the situation. So they know how to behave.

The circumstances you describe are obviously quite serious, but the phrase "active shooter" implies a somewhat different scenario...
