Like most political narratives, this one captures an element of truth. America has an exceptionally high rate of gun violence compared to peer nations, experiences mass public shootings at an all-too-frequent and perhaps increasing rate, and has comparatively permissive gun laws. After high-profile tragedies and inevitable calls for stricter regulation, Congress usually (though not always) takes a pass.
But the people die, nothing happens narrative misses a critical truth: Americas gun violence problem actually is producing policy reform.
Its just that most of this activity is happening on the state level and has received little attention in the national media.

(35,332 posts)Regional diversity gets reflected regionally.
If you insist that the nominative absolute construction in the 2nd amendment be interpreted as a binding constraint, free states should be able to dictate the terms of restrictions on the right to carry and bear arms, since it's their security that's at issue.
The bill of rights was originally a numerated list of restrictions on the federal government to protect some inalienable rights from governmental infringement. Limited government, after a long history of unlimited government; but more government that we had under the confederation.

(9,951 posts)but most of the new gun control laws are in state's that are traditionally very strict on firearms, the rest of the states have been liberalizing their firearm laws.
Even in those pro firearm control states, like NY, CT, CA, those new laws are being flouted and LE is, for the most part, refusing to enforce them.
So, I don't know where the author gets the idea the gun control is actually happening nationwide, but that's simply not true.
