Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerbergs pledge to give away most of his money is shaking the philanthropic world by starting as a for-profit business, soon to have $3 billion at its disposal and eventually as much as $45 billion.
That kind of for-profit venture stands in contrast to a pledge made by Omahan Warren Buffett, who spearheaded a campaign to get the wealthy to pledge at least half their money to charity the traditional, not-for-profit kind.
I think the world of philanthropy is changing, said Sara Boyd, president and chief executive of the Omaha Community Foundation. The traditional structures that weve used are being discarded by some who want to disrupt the sector to see if we can accelerate the pace of change.
Instead of a foundation with tax-exempt status, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, pledged this month to begin giving his Facebook shares and eventually 99 percent of them to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a limited liability corporation not bound by the rules of tax-exempt charities.
