This looks horrible. Directed by Justin Lin. Where has the Star Trek spirit gone?

(65,616 posts)Or the one where the space whales are going to drown the earth? I agree, when the Enterprise dies in the original series it is a big deal. STNG made if forever without blowing up the ship...then the movies started coming out and the Enterprise died almost each movie.
Now it seems to be 'a thing' for the ship to die in every movie. A testament to our throw away society imo.

(63,225 posts)Star Trek III and Star Trek: Generations. Otherwise it's been damaged but not destroyed, and this is pretty consistent with ST:TNG.

(65,616 posts)And now the reboot follows the same formula.

(4,610 posts)I don't think pop music goes along with Star Trek in the first place. But secondly, nothing better to freshen up a franchise than a 20 year old song.

(18,318 posts)the Enterprise I know of which escaped being broken up in the usual manner had run aground; one of these was destroyed to prevent falling into enemy hands, iirc.
The "Big E" (No. 6) was the celebrated carrier of WW II which suffered bombings and I believe torpedo attacks, but lived to fight again. It too was broken up in 1958-60.
It was part of the trio of carriers which sunk four big Japanese carriers at Midway, using dive bombers. Only Yorktown of the U.S. carriers was lost.

(10,201 posts)This would apparently be the first time in the new ST movies that the ship gets destroyed.
Now indeed in the first two, that ship got pretty screwed up, but it was not destroyed. In fact, as you can clearly see the NCC-1701 on the top of the ship as it flies by in the trailer. This is still the same (as yet) un-destroyed ship they have been flying since the first new ST came out.
Now in the first two movies the ship did take a beating, however it came through not destroyed in both.
This is an entirely new timeline, so the old movie ST stuff is not going to happen. However, in both timelines, Khan did kill one of the crew (Kirk and Spock). So why wouldn't the ole NCC-1701 get destroyed in a movie like they did in ST III? How cool will it be to see the next in line of the Constitution class ships - NCC-1701-A and 1701-B (Sulu commanded this one)?

(9,463 posts)...they are supposed to be on a mission of discovery, not war, where the ship is a/the defacto victim. I'd like to see stories that are more in the Star Trek spirit of peace and discovery and inclusion and diplomacy and humanitarianism. Fine, you can make lots of flash and drama and make lasers blow shit up, including the beloved Enterprise, but how about telling a story of the exploratory aspects of the UFP for a change?

(10,201 posts)The movies have to be a bit larger and have more drama.
No worries, CBS is bringing the TV show back in about a year.

(9,463 posts)...almost the exact same wording I was reading yesterday when I decided that Star Trek is how I would spend DU down time yesterday. So I was on Youtube all day watching and reading and I swear...exact same wording about the non-war stories being on TV and the blowing shit up is for the movies.

(54,068 posts)Given how badly the Enterprise gets fucked up even couple of years or so, you'd think they'd fire Scotty and hire an engineer who can plan ahead for a safe ship instead of that constant improvisational jerry-rigging the dude's notorious for.

Sooooooo.....
But I get your point, too.

(54,068 posts)I honestly don't think they really need an Enterprise any more. Just need to rename the franchise "Star Popover"

The first Star Wars had thrilling trade disputes and riveting Senate action and we know how that turned out.
Blow things up!!!

Many comments on social media are calling this Fast & Furious in Space.

(24,438 posts)Not quite sure what to think of it. I wasn't thrilled with it, particularly but the Enterprise has gotten severely damaged in just about every nuTrek movie. Last movie, it was out of power and plummeting to the ground. I think that the directors/producers think that they have to keep "upping the ante" every movie. I can't say that I mind them replacing the Enterprise every once in awhile. I thought that its destruction made sense (and served a purpose) in the context of TOS Star Trek III. I wasn't expecting them to destroy the Enterprise-D in Generations but it didn't bother me.
