COUNCIL BLUFFS – For some kids, $500 buys a lot of toys and video games.

For JJ Johanns, an 11-year-old sixth-grader at Wilson Middle School, $500 bought Christmas for other children.

JJ, who recently won the money in a national essay contest sponsored by Canadian National Railroad, donated all of his winnings to the Council Bluffs Police Department’s Shop with a Cop event.

“I heard about it, and I know some kids in my school participate in it, so I wanted to help people who don’t have a lot of things,” JJ said.

More than 110 children were signed up to participate this year, meaning most of the officers in attendance took several children up and down the clothing sections and toy aisles. Officers spent $125 on each child. JJ's contribution allowed four more children to participate.
