The governor, in order to turn the tables on this trooper, sat down an composed a letter as if it had been written by the hotel manager, addressed it to himself as Governor the the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, apologized for the bad housekeeping and the short-sheeting of his bed, and informed him that we have taken action to fire the chambermaid responsible."
The governor showed that to the trooper that had short-sheeted the bed and, of course, his face went white. He was aghast that something like that had happened.

(13,704 posts)that a state governor would lower himself to pull such a ridiculous "prank". Guess he is a little bit sadistic to enjoy seeing someone squirm.

(45,274 posts)Not just that he would joke about the maid, but that he would do that to the trooper, who sounds like an actual human.
Behind every practical joke is a core of hostility.

(2,381 posts)The trooper played a prank on him, and he played a prank back on the trooper by making the trooper think his prank had gotten an innocent person fired. At no time was the maid's job ever actually in jeopardy, neither was she made to think it was, and as far as I know no one on the hotel staff was even involved in the prank.
There are so many reasons to despise Rmoney, but this isn't one of them.

(2,381 posts)The trooper, part of the governor's security detail, played a prank on the governor first, by short-sheeting his bed. That is probably the kind of thing that can earn a disciplinary procedure, and certainly removal from the governor's detail, which I expect is a pretty plum assignment. Instead Romney just decided to have a little fun hoisting the guy on his own petard for a few minutes.
