Star Wars Just Came Out and It Already Broke A Boxoffice Record...Huff Post

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/star-wars-box-office-fandango_567328aee4b06fa6887ca560
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Anxious "Star Wars" fans who will tolerate none of your spoilers have broken one box office record -- and the movie just came out.

Ticket vendor Fandango says "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has already broken its record for the most tickets sold for any film over its entire theatrical run. It usurped "Jurassic World" -- another nostalgia-heavy flick -- for the title.

Fandango, which sells tickets to a majority of theater screens in the U.S., did not specify the value of the tickets sold. But The Associated Press reported earlier today that the film has earned more than $100 million in presale tickets in North America. What's more, according to a poll on the site, 63 percent of respondents had plans to see "The Force Awakens" more than once in theaters.

So yes, theaters will be packed. But not sold out -- at least according to Disney. The company's head of distribution, Dave Hollis, told AP that "there are literally millions of tickets available for this weekend."

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What this means is that more advance tickets have been sold ahead of showings, by Fandago, (over the internet) ,,(for all showings) than any film. Now most people do not buy their tickets this way, but there has been a large advance due to special showings, and that advance and internet selling is what they are talking about. Most people pay with cash on the day of the showing by just showing up at the theater to see the movie. Many of us think this will be the highest grossing film ever, not adjusted for inflation. The highest grossing film adjusted for inflation is "Gone With the Wind" in case anyone wants to know...Link for that info. from Box Office Mojo....http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Highest Domestic all time grosses total, not adjust for inflation:

It's a fun film all right -- giant heaps of cinematic comfort food. And Daisy Ridley is pretty terrific in it....

I saw it maybe 10 days after it came out, before it was the incredible hit it became. By chance, I read the book ahead of time, andwent downtown with some friends to see it.. First film with the stero sound, but it was incredible!!!.

We.felt so good coming out of that film.on that day in 1977, that in the next few years I saw it 7 times in the theaters. Loved it then, still love the first one now...

And, also I don't know if I correctly recall the reason (I was seven), but it didn't hit Detroit-are theaters until December of that year. And, also if I recall correctly, movies only stayed in the theatre for a much shorter time, even if they were big. Anyway, I dod vividly remember standing out in the cold waiting to get in and a couple behind us held our place while my dad got me some hot chocolate.

I was such a film geek back then. 13 years old and I had been reading about the movie for months. I knew what was coming.

my dad and I waited in line on opening night.

a few weeks later it moved to the "dollar cinema" where my mom worked as cashier. I then would go to work and sit in the theater and watch Star Wars over and over and over. remember I was 13.

this all eventually led to a career in filmmaking that lasted 20 years.

I still have my "making of star wars" books. yeah, I'm still that 13 year old deep down. LOL

Yes, 4 Billion...now that includes everything, merchandising, distribution..etc.. and the cost of this film will be very high...

Still, if the other films are as successful as this one, ..in the long run, Disney may have made a good deal. Disney has already announced that it is going to have "Star Wars" areas in its theme parks. And who knows if this will be a long term revival or just the ballyhoo for this film. Hopefully we will be around to see one way or another.

some of the movie rights to some of the core characters still belong to Sony/Universal/FOX. However, they still make $$$ from those movies as well.

Disney already made over 1 billion from the 1st Avengers movie alone. Between movies & merchandising alone I'm sure they'll get a nice return on their mere 4 billion.

When it comes to children, they had the "little girl" segment locked up with the Disney Princess line. But the best they had for boys was Pirates (and the Lone Ranger didn't pan out). But with Marvel and Star Wars they got it covered (as well as another segment, geeks)....and it looks like they are even trying to branch out Star Wars to females as well.

For Disney's business model, it must have some strong attraction to the boys. And, "Marvel and Star Wars they got it covered." When Disney finishes upgrading its theme parks to include a "Star Wars" presence, then little boys will want to go to those theme parks too, and they are not cheap..(to say the least)

Therefore, if owning Marvel and Star Wars insures that, and Disney has the total "childrens market" then whatever they pay, in the long run, it is worth it. And, if this Star Wars film is a wonderful and uplifting experience, as was the first, then Disney will have "it covered..." great observation. Thank You

who couldn't care less about Star Wars or anything to do with it? I'm beginnig to feel like it! I don't care who likes it or sees it, see it three times a day and buy all the merchandise if you want, have at it. But I couldn't care less myself and it's getting annoying that people get annoyed with me over it. It's like when I lived in Cleveland and didn't give a shit about the Browns, you'd have thought I committed murder or robbery, lol.

I was a teenager when the first movie came out and saw it along with everyone else living at that time. I think my mom and I were the only ones who didn't give a shit about it. My mom's always said "I don't even understand what "the force" is or is supposed to be or why everyone expects me to care". Lol.

Star Wars..the original one..basically was "good guys, vs bad guys". cops vs robbers.. in disguise ..Lots of people couldn't care about it, for whatever reasons they have. When I was "young" everyone said, You got to see .."Gone With the Wind"..so I saw it, not a big deal to me. ...to each his/her own..

I loved the first 3 - which are now called 4,5,6 - but lost interest after that. My son made me watch the new #1, but I just didn't get it. Either I'm too old or this is just too much ado about nothing. Probably the former.

I was surprised to see so many kids. Their parents must have been children when the original movie came out.

No spoilers from me. My husband has bought a ticket for a showing next week so he can see it again. Once is enough
for me.
